A Seasonal Review: Winter 2012

Same drill as usual.

I’ve loosely ranked the season’s shows from worst to best (rough guide: A=awesome, B+=great, B-=good, C=decent, D=bad, F=fail). The numbers in parentheses are how I ranked that series’ first episode at the start of the season. Let’s see how much things have changed.

I’ve tried to keep this post concise. Let’s begin!

Dropped: Recorder to Randsell (18), Kill Me Baby (16), Brave 10 (14), The Knight in the Area (10)

Fallen Behind: Shakugan no Shana III (15 in Fall), Chihayafuru (10 in Fall)

22. Black Rock Shooter — F (started late)
Mentally unstable middle school girls throw tantrums and their alter egos blow shit up.

21. Papa no Iukoto wo Kikinasai! — F (11)
A “touching” story of a family with an annoying little girl and exploding sexual tension.

20. Guilty Crown — F (2 in Fall)
Ouma Shuu.

19. Amagami SS+ — D (8)
A waste of everyone’s time.

18. Nisemonogatari — D (9)
Those with fetishes for prepubescent girls, little sisters and head tilts may enjoy.

17. Rinne no Lagrange (12)
Way too happy, especially Madoka. She pisses me off.

16. Zero no Tsukaima Final — D+ (13)
No surprises here. Too many characters, but a solid ending, all things considered.

15. Mouretsu Pirates (3)
A cool setting, but everyone is too nice and boring.

14. Another — C- (6)
Downright silly violence. You decide if that’s a bad or good thing.

13. Inu x Boku SS — C+ (2)
I like the characters and their costumes, but what’s the point?

12. Aquarion EVOL (19)
This is nothing like the first Aquarion. It’s actually pretty good. The creators seemed to realize how dumb their premise was this time around.

11. Hunter X Hunter (8 in Fall)
Still going strong, but starting to suffer from some of the usual pitfalls of shounen: namely a slow pace and endless training arcs.

10. High School DxD — B- (17)
Knows exactly what it is and takes full advantage of that fact.

9. Thermae Romae — B (15)
Pretty funny show about baths.

8. Persona 4 — B (14 in Fall)
Managed to distinguish itself from the game with a badass main character.

7. Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing — B (7 in Fall)
Great setting, politics, characters and more, but suffered from Fam and not seeming to know what it really wanted to do.

6. Ano Natsu de Matteru — B (7)
A solid romance story, in the tradition of the Onegai series, but without teachers or incest.

5. Senki Zesshou Symphogear — B (5)
Dumb and fun.

4. Mirai Nikki — B (1 in Fall)
A crazy girl with knives, axes and guns.

3. Daily Lives of High School Boys — B+ (4)
Hilarious.

2. Mobile Suit Gundam AGE (5 in Fall)
I loved Asemu’s arc. In a world of X-Rounders, we have a normal human who goes and becomes the best pilot with nothing but hard work and guts.

1. Tantei Opera Milky Holmes 2 — A- (1)
Best show ever. Ok I’m exaggerating slightly but it’s awesome.

  1. Respect for enduring G.C. until the bitter end! Apart from that our lists are quite different as you might imagine from my comments on your individual reviews (my faves were Nisemono and Ano Natsu).

So I’d just like to comment on Chihayafuru. I’m not that much into sports anime but this show imo was close to perfection in its genre. (As opposed to a certain current show) it explained the karuta game very well, the matches were interesting and varied, the characters pretty realistic and the artwork was good as well (Chihaya looked awesome!) ! I would have thought you liked it.

    1. Thank you! I had fine with Guilty Crown though, so no big loss.

I actually do like Chihayafuru. I just haven’t managed to keep up with it somehow… there is too much to watch and this is the show that suffered. I will hopefully finish it eventually.

  2. I kind of dropped Inu x Boku SS because it got a little weird for me (though some of my friends got into it). I know someone else who loves Milky Holmes to that extent too, so you’re not the only one!

By the way, have you seen the move Gotou ni Naritai (5-tou ni Naritai) yet? It was made in 1995, and it was just subbed by Nyantaku (actually Evetaku) weeks ago. This seems like a weird place to recommend it, but it’s an absolutely wonderful movie! If you get a chance, you should watch it. I’d love to see you review it.

    1. Yes! Send your friend my virtual Milky Holmes brofist!

I haven’t seen that. It’s in my queue now, but no guarantees when I’ll get around to watching it.

  3. So many shows man! You are a beast xDD

Ahh winter season…I hardly remember you! Thanks to a certain Oohhh ma shoeeeeee~ I really wished that Guilty Crown did better as far as plot and story because damn did it ever look amazing!? Ah well they can’t all be winners I suppose.

Nichibros! Every week it made me laugh at the hilarious minds of the main cast and high school girls are funky?! YES YOU GIRLS WERE FUNKY! I will sit back and wait for the spin off series <3 I can dream right?

Moretsu Pirates- Sad but true…I have stopped reviewing that for now, but ill probably wrap that series up whenever it ends. So far it has been pretty much like everyone is dubbing it as "moe space pirates" 100% Truth right there, but what was I expecting? I wanted some space battles and action maybe I was looking into it way to much? Anyway Marika and Chiaki keep me coming back for more.

GundamAGE- At first glace I was like OH MY GOD WTF is with the character designs!? That is until I saw the first five episodes and then I was so hooked for the rest of the series, and surprise random Hanazawa Kana character in the second half? I was not expecting to hear her ever in any Gundam series…Sunday nights are my "mecha nights" with Aquarion, Eureka AO and GundamAGE.

Rinne no Lagrange- Yeah I can see how Madoka can make anyone angry just based on how the first few episodes present her character, but every week I looked forward to seeing her weekly with my other batch of mecha shows…the fighting wasn't anything amazing for me, but the OST is so much fun to listen to <3

Anyway winter season had a few hits and lots of misses for me and spring just has lots of amazing shows to enjoy.

    1. More like I’m just crazy.

The most amazing part, perhaps, was that Guilty Crown *wasn’t* the worst show of last season.

Nichibros was funky, and “moe space pirates” is a perfect description. I’ll keep watching too though.

Gundam AGE is awesome, and I originally thought the same thing about the character designs. They’ve won me over though. Madoka still hasn’t managed to win me over in Lagrange…

And yeah, winter kind of sucked. But that may just be in comparison to the two surrounding seasons, which have been crazy good. It did have some good shows still.

    1. It was good, but I can’t really say I looked forward to it each week. Blogging it was a bit of a chore, to be honest.
