A Seasonal Review: Winter 2013

I’ve loosely ranked the season’s shows from worst to best (rough guide: A=awesome, B+=great, B-=good, C=decent, D=bad, F=fail). I’ve tried to keep this post concise. Click on the show title for a full review. Let’s begin!

Dropped: Lots of Shorts, AmnesiaBakumatsu Gijinden RomanCuticle Detective InabaDa Capo IIIGJ-buHakkenden: Eight Dogs of the EastSpace BrosVividred Operation

Yeah, that’s right, I dropped Space Bros. I was already bored out of my mind. And when it didn’t end after 52 episodes…

25. Little Busters — F
What a waste of a good part of my life (even with skimming).

24. Maoyuu Mao Yuusha — F
Wins the award for biggest insult to humanity for the season.

23. Senran Kagura — F
Sushi.

22. Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo — D
Should have ended at episode twelve.

21. Robotics; Notes — D
Didn’t know where it was going.

20. Sasami-san@Ganbaranai — D
Stylish but ultimately empty.

19. Love Live! School Idol Project — C-
Fun but not AKB0048.

18. Magi — C-
I was a bit too harsh on this before… but it’s decent for a shounen fighting show.

17. Seitokai no Ichizon Lv. 2 — C
Still manages to retain the charm of the first season. Unfortunately it was never all that great.

16. OreShura — C
Solid harem show.

15. Chihayafuru — Ongoing
I’m getting a bit tired of all the matches.

14. Koroura-san — C+
Great start, decent end, mediocre middle.

13. Zettai Karen Children THE UNLIMITED — C+
Lolicons.

12. Ixion Saga DTC+
When the comedy hits it’s great. Too bad it usually misses.

11. Hunter X Hunter — Ongoing
Enjoyed the Greed Island arc.

If you haven’t watched this yet you don’t know what you’re missing. It’s a masterpiece.

    1. Zetsuen no Tempest was an odd case in that the first half was more along the lines of a C and the second half was much better, effectively a B+. This list is ranking just the parts of the shows that took place in the winter, so I gave it a higher place than I would have had I compared shows in their entirety.

  1. For some reason, I felt the first season of AKB0048 was better than the second, or maybe that’s because the second season didn’t focus as much on the characters I liked as much, or something. And I liked Little Busters and Sakurasou way more than I probably should have. Other than that, I agree with the rankings on this list.

I also like your taste in 2D women. Rika is the best.

    1. Yeah, I preferred a good part of the first series as well. Mainly I think that’s because the second season had such a big focus on Yuuko and I don’t really care for her. But the Makoto episode in the latest season was the most beautiful episode of the entire show in my view.

  2. I’m surprised you enjoyed so many repetitive shows more than Chihayafuru, but then I suppose there’s a breaking point somewhere. I’m just surprised you enjoyed Greed Island more than delicious Karuta reaction faces I guess.

    1. Greed Island was a bit repetitive (especially with all the training arcs / lecturing about cards) but I’m just kind of sick of matches in Chihayafuru. The Karuta games are great in moderation but it’s been like twelve episodes now…

  3. I quite enjoyed Osaka Okan. Ok, it was ultra low budget but the jokes were just the sort of silly humor I like and I just loved the ending songs!

Shin Sekai Yori was the only series I watched last season which I would call exceptional. Oh, and the veggie song in Minami-ke!

It seems, though, that I missed quite some good shows (AKB0048, Zetsuen, Girls und Panzer).

    1. WATCH AKB0048 BEST SHOW EVER and what you haven’t watched Girls und Panzer?!!! That one seems right up your ally. Lots of cute girls in funny costumes doing ridiculous cute things.

      1. I watched a few episodes of the first season of AKB0048. I liked the premise of idols being prosecuted and doing their business as a sort of rebellion. But there were way too many good series last spring so I had to drop some. Also, I constantly mixed up the girls and couldn’t quite follow the plot.
I’ll certainly pick up Girls und Panzer bluray once it’s out and I have a proper internet connection again. Thanks for your suggestion; I guess you know my preferences by now, so I’m sure you have a point!
