Ano Natsu de Matteru Review — B

Kaito, a boy with ambitions to become a filmmaker, begins summer vacation only to have a spaceship crash land on top of him. A beautiful girl walks out, and she moves into his house. A summer of romance and drama begins.

If you’ve seen either of them before, this show is basically another repacking of Onegai Twins and Onegai Teacher. A dramatic story of high school romance unfolds in a rural setting as we follow a close group of friends through many twists and turns and shipping wars. We’ve had aliens before, and even Remon (the most entertaining character) is nothing new.

But Ano Natsu de Matteru makes one major improvement on its predecessors: there are no teacher / student relationships or incest! This seems like such a no-brainer, but… Japan. This allowed me to enjoy the story much more than the previous two.

Regardless of my feelings toward their choices of romantic partners, the Onegai series both did an excellent job at setting the atmosphere, and Ano Natsu de Matteru continued that trend. The characters are all likable, and these are people you can bring yourself to care about. It has high school drama, but it’s limited to bearable levels (not nearly as bad as an actual high school). The characters are rivals in love and so they fight, but they still remain friends so it isn’t painfully obnoxious.

Overall, it was an enjoyable show, but it plays things safe and doesn’t really do anything new. I feel like I’ve seen this before. Twice.

  • Storytelling – B – Nothing new, but extremely solid storytelling.
  • Voice – A – I love the rural, nostalgic atmosphere for both this and its predecessors.
  • Characters – B – Good, but Kaito is a bit on the dull side.
  • Attention Grab – C – There’s a reason I’m writing this review weeks after it ended.
  • Production – B – I liked the animation style.
  • Overall – B

Recommendations – Onegai Teacher + Twins, Ano Hana, Asatte no Houkou

  1. I’m glad you didn’t rate it worse than “B” as this was my second favourite of last season (after Nisemonogatari which received a “D”)!

Agreed, it was nothing new even for me who hasn’t watched the Onegai series. I also found it somewhat annoying that the characters didn’t really fight (except against the girls from the beach) but instead even prodded each other to go with the respective rival.

I came to like this show a lot, though, for the nostalgic atmosphere you mention, for Lemon-sempai but in particular for Kanna as I found her exceedingly cute. I’m even thinking about rewatching this show some time just for the Kanna scenes.

  2. You’re right about the “taboo” relationships being a sticking point in the Onegai series. It just made me a bit uncomfortable to think about stuff like that when I was trying to enjoy some romantic comedy. I think they also made some major improvements in the area of character development.

    1. Exactly. I can enjoy the development of a relationship much more when I’m not worried about him making babies with his sister.

  3. another season would be great
if romance comedy shows are not open ending types that would be great
whats the point of making a story without even finishing the story? i mean its just sad to see the protagonist struggle and endure the hardship while thinking that he could make earth an F lvl planet that just sucks

cause when i watch anime i just dont watch it ifeel it hahaha FANBOY HERE hoping for another season so mail me if you hear news about the second season THANKS ♥

    1. I prefer actually endings as well. It’s disappointing when a show goes through so much trouble to end up right where it started.

I hope there will be a second season, but I’m not optimistic.
