Berserk Review — C

Guts goes berserk and spills lots of guts with his big, thick sword.

My opinion of this is similar to my opinion of the manga: Farnese’ arc with everyone being massacred in the exorcists tower was great. (although if I recall correctly the anime version was a lot tamer?) Then once the little witch girl shows up everything turns to crap. This was a dark fantasy about a man who’d gone to hell and back. And it was great. So what in the world made the author decide to turn it into a standard RPG storyline of gathering a party and saving the world with magic and friendship and shit? If this ever does get continued (unlikely, since the manga is going absolutely nowhere) it’s going to continue in this vein. So I have minimal interest in the remainder of the series.

A lot of people hate the CG art style. I don’t mind it, honestly. I think it has the potential to be okay. But it certainly didn’t live up to that potential. In many scenes, there was very little motion or detail. Many of the monsters just look silly. And the facial expressions are atrocious.

Berserk is at its best when it’s dark, brutal and relentless. It’s a shame the author decided to ditch everything that made the series good.

  • Storytelling – C – Good first half, loses its way in the second part.
  • Voice – C – See above.
  • Characters – B – That stupid witch girl… I’m mad at myself that I even care so much.
  • Attention Grab – C – Lost interest in second half.
  • Production – D – Can get pretty bad.
  • Overall – C

Recommendations – Guin Saga, Hellsing Ultimate
