Black Rock Shooter Review — F

Middle school girls throw temper tantrums over nothing. Their school counselor leads them towards suicide. Shit blows up.

This was painful to watch. I thought the drama at my middle school was ridiculous, but Black Rock Shooter makes real middle schoolers look mentally and emotionally stable. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with these people? They all need to be checked into an insane asylum.

Aside from that, the story makes no bloody sense. There are two worlds: the real world filled with insane middle school girls, and the world of colors where these girls’ avatars fight each other endlessly. The other world looks cool, I guess, and the fights are well made. But they are utterly pointless and between characters that I couldn’t care less about. It’s just fighting for the sake of fighting and making cool visuals.

Avoid this at all costs unless you enjoy watching kids throw temper tantrums.

  • Storytelling – F – I fail to see why this show was ever made.
  • Voice – F – Reminds me of everything I hate in life.
  • Characters – F – Someone please bring these children to the hospital and prosecute their counselor for gross criminal negligence.
  • Attention Grab – F – The school life makes me want to run away from the screen (note how late this review is) and I don’t care about the fighters.
  • Production – B – The fights looked pretty cool.
  • Overall – F

Recommendations – No.

  1. I generally like mentally unstable or even lunatic characters and I don’t mind a good dose of angst. Therefore I enjoyed the first half (in particular Kagari). In the second half I had a hard time telling the girls and fighters from each other and following the plot.

Re the fights: I dislike CGI in anime (the sole exception being the Precure series’ ED’s) and this applies to the other world fights, as well. Imo they were also ridiculous and overblown. I would have appreciated the series much more if the creators would have stuck to the middle school world. But as the show seems to be reverse engineered from Huke’s (admittedly good looking) BRS artwork this wasn’t an option in the first place, I guess.

    1. I usually like lunatics as well, but this was just too crazy for me. In Higurashi and Mirai Nikki, they add some terror to the craziness to make things more interesting, along with a good deal of development for the switch from normal to crazy. Here they just seemed to go crazy over the mildest things for no discernible reason. And instead of going after people with an axe they just bitched about it and threw things.

I didn’t mind the fights, but can see where you’re coming from. Usually CG is horrible but I think sometimes it works out ok.
