DATE A LIVE Review — C+

Our hero is awakened by his sister jumping on top of him in bed, and he spends the day flirting with cute girls at school.

Then he learns that his sister commands a flying battleship and his love interest is a cyborg who fights aliens. He has to date all the aliens or they will destroy the world!

This premise sounds completely retarded at first glance. But I enjoyed it immensely. It’s quite funny as a parody of dating sims. The crew of the ship will get some choices, as in a visual novel, and the main character will execute the one they vote on. Usually it’s blindingly obvious but they’ll debate it anyway. Sometimes all the choices are idiotic. There are tons of other ridiculous things going on, like an NGE-style town transformation where all the food stalls are actually missile launchers.

DATE A LIVE also has some excellent, bizarre fanservice. Origami is the best, FYI.

We also have a villain who is murderously insane. I’m a bit of a sucker for that. Yeah that’s right, look forward to my review on Crime Edge, one of the best shows of the season.

My biggest complaint is that two of the female characters, Tohka and Yoshino, are infuriating. I want to strangle them both. Tohka is an idiot, and Yoshino is a loli who talks through a puppet. Ugh.

  • Storytelling – B – Surprisingly engaging given the content.
  • Voice – B – A silly setup that serves well as a parody.
  • Characters – D – The biggest weakness of the show are Tohka and Yoshino. Plus the main character is a wet blanket, but that comes with the genre, I suppose. Otherwise the characters are pretty solid.
  • Attention Grab – B – Kept me interested except when Tohka and Yoshino appeared.
  • Production – C – Looks fine.
  • Overall – C+

  1. It is popular. So that 2nd season is announced already. Even SAO didn’t have that.
Tohka is your usual dumb broad, and Yoshino is the cute and well behaved loli. The other girls are… pretty mediocre. But they give pretty good laugh. My favorite is actually the expressionless trio, especially the one who always say “Disgusting…”
Too bad they didn’t have more appearance, but hey, the comedy might lose it’s charm if it’s done too often.

    1. It’s a pretty good show. Not going to begrudge it a second season. 🙂

I thought Origami and the sister were hilarious.

    2. It’s not that DAL is more popular than SAO, SAO’s anime is not that good but the fanbase from the LN is huge. SAO’s novel format is kind of hard to adapt so ss2 may have to wait for a while.

      1. Yeah, even a good portion of the SAO fanbase seems to acknowledge that the anime isn’t all that good. That said, from having watched the anime I find it hard to believe that the light novels are any good…

  2. i have a brand new anime or manga featuring a 36 year old scientist researcher and inventor named Adam lee he is quite wealthy he lives in Tokyo Japan he creates tons of tech and sells it around the world he is a successful business executive he also enjoys looking at space he discovers a unidentified flying object at night in a telescope this UFO crashes into the arctic ocean a team of scientists and researchers get sent to find this UFO it is a giant highly advanced spaceship.

  3. inside the spaceship is a containment unit or incubator for a egg the scientists take the incubator with the egg in it to a lab for research the egg hatches a miniature extraterrestrial worm or larva or maggot like parasite with a mouth with tons of teeth comes out the scientists decide to feed this alien creature with tons of plants and animals from around the world it begins to take genetic data from its food supply and changes to take on characteristics of its prey they name the alien specimen as alpha omega zero the alien creature starts also wants humans both male and female to add as its prey and begins eating and absorb genes from its prey then it becomes a giant pupa or cocoon inside it is a giant humanoid intersex half human half alien half plant half human half male and half female baby the sac comes open and a new team of scientists come to research this creature they give it a new name of Evangelina Jackson this weird humanoid baby it raised by Dr Solomon Jackson and his wife named Rebecca Jackson.
