Eromanga-sensei Review — B+

A light novel author writes novels with lewd illustrations drawn by his sister (of course, they are in love with each other, as are all siblings).

I never thought I would find myself thoroughly and unironically enjoying a story by the author of Oreimo. Yet here we are.

This was really good. Yes, the siscon is still siscon, but this time it’s done in a way that I can sort of accept, where they only become adopted siblings after they’re fully grown.

But the main thing is, this felt quite fresh and entertaining. Even if the show uses the traditional anime harem tropes as guidance, it doesn’t feel bound by them and adds a unique twist in every case. We have the innocent friend from class who loves dicks, Elf Yamada who is just plain nuts, the yamato nadeshiko who is an obsessive fangirl, and the imouto who draws porn. At a high level it might be the usual harem but it still feels very fresh and each of the characters has plenty of individuality. Same with the male lead, who is completely obsessed with his sister and his novels. The show approaches everything with a sense of humor.

  • Storytelling – B – Kept things very entertaining.
  • Voice – B – The genre’s been beaten to death, but kept it fresh.
  • Characters – A – They’re great.
  • Attention Grab – B – One of the shows I looked forward to most.
  • Production – B – Looks good.
  • Overall – B+
