Fall 2013 Anime Preview

I’ll be the first to admit that I have no idea how next season’s new shows will turn out. So I don’t do any research whatsoever. I just look at this chart, read the summary, and look at the preview image. Your guess is as good as mine. Enjoy: (click to enlarge)

Fall 2013 Anime Chart v2

Highlights:

  • VALVRAVE RETURNS! YES! YES! YES!
  • Outbreak Company sounds so retarded it could possibly be a work of genius.
  • Infinite Stratos I never understood the love for. It was mediocre in every way.
  • KILL la KILL sounds so dumb and has such an awful name that it’s got to be good.
  • Same with Galilei Donna. Three of Galileo’s descendants are on international wanted lists? Huh?
  • Kyoukai no Konata involves Kyoani animating a fantasy story that is not Munto? Count me in!
  • Coppelion is an anime about nuclear radiation. Sweet. Too bad it’s still about high school girls…
  • Yozakura Quartet had a great OVA, although the original TV show was crap.
  • Kyousogiga‘s OVA was complete crap. Can’t believe this is getting so much hype.
  • Pupa sounds great.
  • Seitokai Yakuindomo should just come out with a second season already. How many OVAs have they made at this point?
  • I’m looking forward to all but one of the movies coming out. That must be a first.

Valvrave’s second season alone means this season is going to be amazing, but some of the other shows are looking up too. This looks like it could be an excellent season for fantasy, which we could always use more of.

  1. I simply love your previews, your sense of humour is amazing. About the anime the only one i can somewhat recommend is Samurai Flamenco (same director as durarara and baccano, if you liked those).
I kind of like this season’s lineup, the ones i’m looking forward to the most are hajime no ippo: rising (really liked the first 2 seasons), Daiya no A (Madhouse + Production I.G., have I died and gone to heaven?),and the really obvious ones everyone is going to watch (Kill la kill, Kyoukai no Kanata,etc.). Also I’ve heard a lot of good things about Blazblue, but i’m somewhat cautious since…. game adaptation.

    1. Glad you enjoy them. 🙂

Ooh, Baccano is one of my favorite series of all time, I’m really looking forward to Samurai Flamenco now. I’ve heard good things about Blazblue as well, but… game adaptation.

  2. As excited as I am for Kyoukai no Kanata because KyoAni and all, the plot description sounds like it could just be a Monogatari-series clone. Since the source is a light novel, I’m worried that the story won’t live up the the production values.

    1. Based on everything Kyoani has made in the past, I really cannot even imagine them coming out with a Monogatari-clone. It is impossible for my brain to even conceive. But… I could be wrong. Let’s hope not though.

  3. I personally looking forward for AIkatsu!, Gundam Build Fighters, Gaist Crusher and Valvrave The Liberator 2nd Season. However, I will also check out Yowamushi Pedal, Log Horizon and Samurai Flamenco. I’ll see how others’ first impressions on other shows before checking them out.

As a side note, I wondered if Valvrave The Liberator 2nd Season will be at least better than Gundam Build Fighters, considering that the first season was worse than Danball Senki Wars. Hopefully this fall season would be an enjoyable season for both of us.

    1. I’ll check out the first episode of everything, even the ones with red X’s. May even watch some of them to completion since I’m a bit of a masochist.

I don’t know what you are talking about Valvrave was the best anime of the year. And the year isn’t even over yet.

      1. I personally think that Valvrave is a rather weak show, especially when it comes to plot progression, characters and battle choreography. When I say Danball Senki Wars is better than Valvrave, I refer specifically to battle choreography, but this also applies to plot progression. I do understand why people give good reviews over it, though.

  4. Will be checking out Pupa (great director here), samurai flamenco (I’m a hue fan of omori’s works, he’s very versatile), kill la kill, kyoukai no kanata (for the animation and Kyoani possibly stepping outside of their comfort zone) and lastly yowamushi pedal. Heard lots of great things about that one. As a Chihayafuru and Hikaru No Go fan I’m not missing this one.

    1. This season looks like it’s going to be awesome. Well I mean we already knew it was going to be awesome because VALVRAVE but still.

  5. Well I’m mostly looking for Kara no Kyoukai (although Coppelion sounds interesting) and the Mahou Shojo Madoka Magica sounds interesting.
(I wonder when will the new FSN anime/Ova/something else by UFOtable will come out…)

    1. I heard they were doing something or other for Heaven’s Feel. Can’t wait for that. Let’s hope they don’t fuck it up like they have with every other Type Moon show.

    1. You know, this is a really interesting comment. You’ve made me realize that I actually consider “mediocre” a worse insult than “bad”.

  6. What? You’re immediately crossing out Blazblue because it’s based on a video game? But, but… 🙁

About the rest: Hm, this season doesn’t look very promising mostly. Except for the movies I guess. Kara no Kyoukai, Ghost in the Shell and Persona 3 will be the movies I’m gonna look forward the most, though.

    1. Eh, I’ll watch the first episode and hope it proves my first impression wrong. After Devil Survivor 2 though I’ve basically given up on all video game adaptations.

  7. I love how you circled the ‘160,000 feet’.
Considering that earth’s radius is only 6.3 km, I wonder what kind of stuff did they dig out from 50 km underground, LOL.
Unless these characters live on Saturn or Jupiter?

    1. LOL what are you smoking, the Earth’s radius is 6300 km. If it was 6.3 km you could walk around the entire planet in a day or two.

  8. Hi Draggle, I’ve been absent for a while as I was traveling and holidaying for about a month. So I’m seriously lagging behind with everything this season. Except for Silver Spoon which for some reason emerged as my favourite. I hope I can catch up soon and provide some comments again on your esteemed posts!

Fall 2013 looks quite solid although I’m sad that the announced new Sailor Moon season is not scheduled. The series I find most promising are the same as yours, so there is not much to add. Except for Valrave, I guess I’d have to watch season 1 first but most likely won’t find the time. The same unfortunately applies for White Album. I’ll give Kyousogiga a try – I didn’t watch the OVA’s but setting and character design seem promising in my eyes. I will watch Magi 2, as well, as I quite enjoyed the first season. Also, I’ll have a closer look at Kikou Shoujo – puppets sounds interesting (not so sure about “symphonic”, though)! Finally, I’m not into baseball anime at all but the picture of Daiya no A looks so good that I’ll give this one a try, as well.

Re movies, it seems that Ghibli is planning a Kaguya-hime adaptation! This fairytale is so awesome that a Ghibli adaptation simply must be awesome!

    1. Welcome back! Hope you enjoyed your vacation. Silver Spoon has been quite good.

It’s okay, Valvrave isn’t for everyone. Sadly. I thought the setting for Kyousogiga was promising as well, but the OVAs were terrible. A bunch of people claim those OVAs are the greatest thing ever though, so it may be more to your liking than mine.

Whoa, a Kaguya-hime movie by Ghibli would be amazing. Actually pretty much anything by Ghibli is guaranteed to be amazing.
