Fifty Questions About Me

AceRailgun started this whole trend of answering a list of fifty questions last week, and I figured I might as well jump on the train. Hopefully this will tell my readers a bit more about myself. Marina seems to have the most complete list of other participants in this question answering. Here we go:

Questions about Anime

1. Who is your favorite male anime character?

Volken from Book of Bantorra. I love how he just goes and does what’s right, consequences be damned. The runner-ups would include Rail Tracer from Baccano, Fakir from Princess Tutu, and Satou from Welcome to the NHK. Oh, and that psychologist from Ghost Hound is great too.

2. Who is your favorite female character?

This one’s a bit harder. I’ll go with Ogiue from Genshiken, but Yuuko Amasawa from Dennou Coil, Ringo Oginome from Penguindrum, Chiba Saori from Hourou Musuko, and the entire cast of Simoun are close on her heels.  And I do have soft spots for Hinagiku from Hayate no Gotoku and Yakumo from School Rumble.

3. What is your favorite anime soundtrack?

Simoun’s.

4. What is your favorite anime opening + animation?

The Narutaru OP. Most hilarious thing ever, and great music too. The runner ups would be Oh! Edo Rocket, Penguindrum and Nichijou. I tend to fast forward through the OPs and EDs unless I like them (meaning, they are not J-pop) so the songs I will actually listen to are a selective bunch. I will occasionally listen to a J-pop one though, for example, recently I liked the soundtrack for Ao no Exorcist.

5. What is your favorite anime ending song + animation?

Again, the ending songs for Oh! Edo Rocket are some of my favorites. This reminds me, I wrote a post on this for another site… you may hear more about this at some point. Runner ups include Penguindrum once again and also the hilarious Detroit Metal City ED.

6. What is your favorite anime scene?

Very tough question. I’m going to go with the scene from Gunparade March where Hayami rescues Mai by knocking her unconscious, dragging her through the snow and chanting a children’s story to himself through a horde of monsters. So awesome.

Some of my other favorite scenes include when Dominique peeked inside the Simoun, Rail Tracer’s rooftop confession in Baccano, and Anemone’s midair embrace in Eureka Seven.

7. If you could meet an anime character who would it be?

I would like to meet Ouma Shuu from Guilty Crown so I could punch him in the face.

8. What anime character is most similar to you in terms of personality?

From what comes to mind at the moment, I’d go with Shinpachi from Oh! Edo Rocket. Yes, I am a nerd.

9. What is your favorite thing about anime?

My favorite thing compared to western TV is that it has a story that actually ends. In America series just seem to go on forever and ever… In anime, they tell the story and then stop, which is nice. I also think the fact that it’s animated rather than live action allows anime to be much more imaginative. How could you do all this live action sci-fi and steampunk? You’d either have to have a shitload of money or it would suck.

10. What is your least favorite thing about anime?

Stupid Japanese fetishes. I am not interested in maid outfits, school swimsuits, or tentacles. Or the ten millionth culture festival or beach episode.

Also many anime tend to focus on some fairly stupid themes. Half of all anime have someone go through an identity crisis and it’s solved by having the sponge (male lead) say “You’re you, you!” If only life were that simple. There’s also the fact that ninety percent of anime involving gods have the gods be manmade constructions. Someone discovers this, cue dramatic music… “You could call it… God.” This would be kind of interesting if they didn’t do it in every single series.

A third thing: boobs. Breasts should be smaller than heads. They say bigger is better, but there’s a limit which anime has long since passed.

11. Who is your favorite anime couple?

Ogiue and Sasahara from Genshiken. You can check out the runner ups here. That list needs to be updated with Shouma and Ringo from Penguindrum.

12. Who is your favorite anime animal?

Densuke from Dennou Coil, of course. No other animal comes close.

13. What anime would make a good game?

Banner of the Stars would make a good Total War game… IN SPACE! I think an SMT style spinoff in the universe of Shadow Star Narutaru would be fucking awesome. I’d also like to see tactical RPGs a la Fire Emblem / Front Mission in the universe of Break Blade.

14. What game would make a good anime?

Fate / Stay Night, SAKURA’S ROUTE. PLEASE. After playing the game, this arc put the rest of the series to shame. Also Tsukihime dark side would be nice. I’d like more anime based on SMT, but not the Persona kind. Persona is the lamest SMT subseries in my opinion. Lunar would make a good OVA, and a full adaptation and partial reimagining of Xenogears would be amazing.

15. What was the first anime you ever watched?

Spirited Away, which I watched in my English class. I was blown away. Two years later I had watched pretty much all the Miyazaki movies (plus Whisper of the Heart). I got into watching television anime through Code Geass. I watched it with a few friends, one of whom loved to hate it and always called it Code Gayass. Those were some truly enlightened conversations, as you may well imagine. I guess he is the one who got me into talking about anime, which eventually led me to start a blog.

16. Do you think you’ll ever stop watching anime?

Well, at some point I’ll be dead. I’ll probably stop at that point.

17. What is your favorite genre of anime?

I like anime spanning a bunch of different genres, but my favorites are probably Sci-fi / fantasy (bonus points for steampunk) and comedy.

18. What is your least favorite genre of anime?

I can’t stand shounen fighting shows or shoujo romances. Oh and yaoi.

19. Are you open about watching anime with people you know?

Depends on who. I don’t exactly advertise the fact I watch anime, but most of my friends know. I have a few good friends I often watch it with, but most people I tell I like anime say “oh, me too” and then I have to listen to them talk about how either Naruto or FMA (the original) is the greatest anime ever made. They have never heard of anything I like it and tell me I have terrible taste and don’t know anything about good anime. Then I try to get them to watch DMC or Penguindrum and they say the shows are messed up. Although I did have one friend who hated both DMC and Penguindrum and loved Yuruyuri, so… I’ll count that as a success.

20. Have you ever been to Japan?

Well, I passed through the Tokyo airport a few times on the way to Singapore and Taiwan, if you want to count that… I have a couple friends there and in China, and I’m planning to make a trip to visit them at the end of the year.

21. What anime was the biggest let down for you?

There have been so many let-downs that it’s hard to say. Perhaps a combination of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. From what I heard, these were the greatest anime ever made. I didn’t particularly like either.

22. What anime was better than expected?

Hm… I’ll go with Kannazuki no Miko. The first six episodes make the list of the most godawful series I’ve ever watched, but the ending was fantastic.

In terms of my expectations before I even started watching the series, I’ll go with MILKY HOLMES. I thought it was going to be some kiddy show about cute girls playing detective. Boy was I wrong. It ended up as one of my favorite comedies.

23. What is the best anime fight scene?

I’m not too big on fight scenes. I guess I’d pick something from Hellsing Ultimate or Break Blade. Or anything involving the Fuhrer in FMA Brotherhood.

24. Who is your anime waifu?

Um… if I had to pick, I guess Yakumo from School Rumble or Hinagiku from Hayate? Although recently I had an affair with that Diet lady from UN-GO. And Izumi from Another. And before that I cheated on them for Eclair from Dog Days and Ringo from Penguindrum. Yeah, I don’t really do the whole “waifu” thing.

25. What was your favorite video game as a child?

Super Mario World. Best game ever made. I also had a lot of fun with Super Smash Bros. and Tribes 2.

Questions about me

26. Most Embarrassing moment?

Hmm… This embarrassed me at the time, but it’s pretty benign thinking back on it. I had this teacher who was a moron. To introduce ourselves to the class, we were supposed to draw a picture of something that reminds us of ourselves and show it to the class. I drew a picture of a tree. Other people drew flowers, cars, pencils, refrigerators… I don’t remember. It was dumb. But we get to me and I say my name, and that I remind myself of a tree. For everyone else they sat down at this point and it went to the next person. But the teacher decides to ask me, “So why do you remind yourself of a tree?”

“Umm… I like trees.” My one friend still makes fun of me for this to this day. Although looking back on it this wasn’t all that bad. I’ve probably done more embarrassing things which I’ve forgotten.

27a. Can you drive?

Yeah.

27b. Do you own a car?

No. I can walk / ride a bus where I live and am too lazy to take care of a car.

28. Are you mature?

I think so. Although sometimes I wish I weren’t.

29. What year were you born?

1988. The year when all the cool people were born. Just in time to win the Cold War.

30. Do you prefer cats or dogs?

Cats. Although I would want neither. I used to have pet gerbils though. And fish, until my mom murdered them by washing their tank with soap.

31. Describe yourself physically.

Hi—mi—tsu~~~ I will say I’m kind of tall and wear glasses. A professor once told me I “have the mad scientist look.” Ethnically, I’m half Jewish, a quarter German, an eighth Danish, and I forget what the other eighth is.

32. What would you name your first child?

No clue.

33. What is the worst injury you have ever had?

I’ve been lucky enough to not have any major injuries.

34. What is your worse habit?

Probably being lazy.

35. Do you drink or smoke?

No, smoking just completely grosses me out… why would you breathe smoke?… and alcohol just smells gross. I actually don’t drink anything but water.

36. Do you have a tattoo?

No way.

37. Are you a morning person or a night person?

I used to be a morning person, would wake up at 5:30 or 6:00 every morning. When I went to college I discovered that this type of schedule would mean I had no social life, since everything happens from 10 PM to 3 AM. So I followed the trend.

38. Have you ever slept past midday

Rarely, but occasionally in college. I had this jackass for a roommate who would go to sleep at 6 AM and refused to turn the light off, so I had some trouble sleeping my first year of college.

39. Do you regret anything?

No. Regrets are for people who make mistakes.

40. Can you count the number of friends you have on one hand?

No.

41. Do you wear glasses?

Yes, all the time. I’m farsighted. Could not get contacts because I’m deathly afraid of objects entering my eye. They tried to do that thing where they poke your eye with the blue light at the eye doctor’s to me ten years ago but I had a panic attack and nearly fainted. I’m fine with the dentist though.

42. Are you a picky eater?

I used to be, but not so much anymore. There are a few things I absolutely cannot stand though: soda, melted cheese (like when it’s gooey, such as on pizza, I take the cheese off, but liquid, e.g. mac and cheese, or solid is fine), and baked beans.

43. Would you die for someone?

Not if I could help it.

44. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

It would be cool if I could teleport and / or fly.

45. Do you believe in the supernatural?

I don’t believe in it, but I know it’s true.

46. Would you rather be rich or famous?

I guess rich, unless I could specify what I was famous for

47. Have you ever committed a crime.

Sure. Not anything serious though. Never, I am an upright citizen in good standing. cc FBI

48. Time Traveler or ghost?

Time traveler, of course! Is this even a contest? Why would anyone want to be a ghost? That means you’re dead.

49. Does someone have a crush on you?

Not that I know of.

50. Are you in a relationship?

Nope.

Feel free to make fun of me in the comments now that I have bared my soul to you.

30 thoughts on “Fifty Questions About Me

  1. Ahh…need to play more SMT stuff. Still have to finish Digital Devil Saga and start Nocturne and Devil Survivor 2 >.>

I’m telling you…mass exodus to Japan…let’s do it.

With the contacts thing, I used to be like that with my eyes too, but after a couple of times, you kinda forget about it…of course this only works with contacts. I still hate other stuff getting close to my eyes.

    1. Yes you do, I love the SMT games. I have to finish Digiital Devil Saga and Nocturne too though, actually. 🙂 Nocturne is my favorite one I’ve played so far.

  2. Major props for inclusion of Densuke. He is amazing.

Not so much for badmouthing the Persona games. I like those a lot! There are probably better Shin Megami Tensei series games, but I’d say that P3 and 4 are the most polished and accessible by a long shot.

I mean, Nocturne’s pretty great from what I’ve played, but can you check your demon’s skills before you fuse them? Is demon conversation anything more than a random number generator set in stone from the very beginning of the battle? I don’t think so >:(

    1. They’re definitely more polished and accessible, but I’m the type of person who looks it less accessible. I prefer crazy religious conspiracy theories to high school gossip any day of the week. 🙂

      1. But the high school gossip is supposed to be a more compelling alternative to demon negotiation! And Persona 3 is one of the most tightly written games in the entire SMT series! And Hitler’s one of the bad guys! What more do you want???

By the way have you read any of Angel Sanctuary? Did you know that Kaori Yuki is an enormous fan of Shin Megami Tensei? It’s a fact that blew my mind after I learned it because it should have been TOTALLY OBVIOUS considering the majority of her work.

Also don’t take my ragging personally, Nocturne’s pretty cool in my book. Have yet to play Digital Devil Saga, although it’s in my library of games. What do you think of Strange Journey and Devil Survivor?

        1. It’s a great game, don’t get me wrong! I just like the other ones better. 🙂 I like Devil Survivor are a lot, that kind of gameplay appeals to me more than the straight-up RPG battles. I like Strange Journey as well, although I haven’t gotten too far in that yet.

I haven’t read Angel Sanctuary, but now I think I’ll have to!

  3. Hah! You have some of the most amusing answers that I’ve seen in this whole 50 questions trend. I’m glad you jumped on the bandwagon 🙂

I also love how diverse the anime you mention are. I actually did not recognize a lot of the character names, and some of the titles. I am also once again reminded to watch Simoun >.<

And as a huge cheese lover, I'm saddened to hear your dislike for melty cheese :p That's where so many cheese shine!

    1. Glad you enjoyed it! Go watch Simoun!

I actually love cheeses too, just not melty ones. Don’t like the texture.

  4. Draggle!

    2. I can’t speak for others on that list, but I do appreciate how believable Ringo seemed. She was selfish, had flaws and desires. That series did a good job with characters. It was the strange abstract symbolism that did it in for me.

    9. I never thought about that. On the flip side, many series are limited because of this. Because there is always resolution, you almost have to expect it. In a 13 episode series, you know that episodes 9-10 will introduce conflict, 11-12 will resolve it and 13 wraps up loose ends. The better anime are more subtle about it, and the best ones break the formula.

    10. But…don’t you want to see how character X looks in a yukata?!

    19. I’m pretty sure this is universal among anime fans.

    21. I am stunned. Besides having the best soundtrack ever, Champloo had a good story and setting. And it was balanced. Definitely in my top 10.

    26. That experience belongs in an anime of some sort. Probably a pilot episode…pretty funny to read about from the outside looking in!

    1. Chike!

      2. Yep, she’s great. You might want to watch some of the other shows too, they’re all excellent. 🙂

      9. True, true, there is a formula. But, it’s a formula that pretty much all stories follow, not just anime. Western TV series follow it too, they just do it all within a single episode. Or they’re a pointless comedy (not that there’s anything wrong with that: comedy anime do the same thing).

      10. Not particularly. 🙂

      19. Yeah, I think so. I’ve made it my personal quest to spread the love of DMC throughout the world.

      21. It had good music, and it was balanced, but it just didn’t grab me. Not really sure why.

      26. Yeah… it was also on my first day of high school, which made it more memorable for me.

  5. #7 is freaking funny. Out of curiosity, I know you hate Shu and all, but is he your most hated anime character, or do you have someone else in mind?

    1. Ouma Shuu is currently the character I hate most for being such a shitty character, although that may be recency bias speaking. I also tend to hate childhood friends, genki girls (i.e., Madoka from Rinne no Lagrange) and bland harem leads.

There are also characters that are well developed and that I like as a character but hate as a miserable excuse for a human being. The two prime examples are Suzaku from Code Geass and Misato from Evangelion (particularly the movie version).

  6. Good stuff..

#6: I agree with the Baccano scene, and also Satou playing the multiplayer RPG in Welcome to the NHK.

#10: I’d pick the opposite of your choice: lolis! Especially all the loli action/harems…

#12: Densuke is good, but what about the Wise Wolf, Holo?

    #21: What about Trigun?

#25: Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country 1+2 are the best…

    1. I hate lolis too! I’d include that in the maids / school swim suits category though. Their breast size isn’t the issue.

Holo’s a god so I don’t think she counts as an animal. Densuke would still edge her out though.

I actually liked Trigun, I thought it was funny. Not the greatest show ever, but enjoyable. Could have done without the more serious parts though.

  7. I am suprised there weren’t any mentions of Code Geass (1 doesn’t count), Steins;Gate and Makoda…

Also, did you watch Toward the Terra?

    1. Ah, you’re right, I should have mentioned Code Geass more. Lelouch should probably be another runner-up favorite male character, and half that show could be in my list of favorite moments. Steins;Gate and Madoka were great, but not really great enough to be numbered among my favorites.

I did watch Toward the Terra. I enjoyed it, but it just didn’t hook me somehow.

  8. Haha, so amusing and interesting answers!

Re 2: Of course I’m happy to find Saorin on your list!

Re 5 and 8: I really have to look for a download source for Oh! Edo Rocket now! Life has become so much harder after they closed my filehoster of choice 🙁

Re 7: When I read the question a million characters instantly came to my mind most of which I guess you would like as well. What a waste to choose Ouma Shuu instead! Actually I cry every week when I see that you still devote elaborate posts to this awful show 😉 I hope you do get to meet Misa Grandwood instead as a penance!

Re 10: As you might have guessed from my comments I don’t mind the odd fetish (even tough not particularly the ones you mention) 😉 Re boobs I agree although I guess Shinobu size wouldn’t be your case either, right? If you’re looking for real, not manmade gods – I quite enjoyed Nekogami Yaoyorozu and it has lots of gods. Be warned, however, that Koihime Musou is intellectually demanding compared to that show!

    1. 2: You have excellent taste

5+8: Edo Rocket’s great if you can find it. It’s a bit obscure unfortunately. Did not get the attention it deserved.

7: Nooooo! Anyone but Misa. She wouldn’t even be worth punching because I’d have to listen to her voice!

10: I don’t mind the odd fetish either. Long socks and glasses, for example, are A-OK! Note the qualifier: *stupid* fetishes. 🙂

I tried to watch Nekogami Yaoyorozu and it damaged my brain. 🙁 I’m not actively looking for breasts, I just wish they were reasonably sized so I noticed them less for the wrong reasons (i.e., for defying the laws of physics). And yeah, I’d put lolis under the list of stupid fetishes.

  9. Hmm, I never thought of wanting to meet an anime character because of how much I disliked them. If I ever come across Shu, I’ll be sure to punch him for you.

I like most of your waifu choices, but I would’ve gone with Milhi instead of Eclair.

    1. Thanks! Let me know if you meet him, I’ll buy you dinner.

Milhi is great too. Maybe I’d have to have a harem.

  10. Oh EDO ROCKET!? I love that series…at first I thought it was sooo dumb, but after watching it with my brother I got addicted…I guess the character designs got my attention! That and the main girl looks a lot like Eureka. I recently saw a few dub episodes and found it to be very funny xD

Speaking of Oh! EDO Rocket! The opening and ending songs are great! I think we need a sccsav watch? I think most of the dub/sub episodes are on youtubes! Oh yes.

Best embarrassing story of all time! LOLOL I laughed, but that answer is perfect I like trees? Good stuff!

These 50 questions are fun all of the Metanorn writers are doing theirs soon.

    1. She does look like Eureka. I love that show though. Sora not so much (the whole alien subplot is honestly the weakest part) but I love just seeing what they do on the block.

If this gets watched in SCCSAV you could probably count me in! Maybe we could suggest it after Spice and Wolf.
