Gin no Saji S2 Review — C+

Adventures in agricultural school, continued.

Unsurprisingly, it’s pretty similar to the first season. I rated this season slightly lower because things seemed to be moving more slowly. Or it may have just felt that way since I’m more used to these characters now.

But, as before, excellent characterizations. This season Hachiken gets closer to Mikage and tries to deal with his family. Still has a good sense of humor, but this season was a bit more serious than the previous one from what I recall. It deals with issues of growing up and with some financial difficulties the characters encounter, now that Hachiken has gotten over his simple horror over life at the agricultural school.

  • Storytelling – C – Could stand to be more focused. Not really a clear theme, and the plot is mostly doing stuff at school.
  • Voice – C – Stylistically, offers nothing special.
  • Characters – B – Good characterizations, particularly for Hachiken and Mikage and how they deal with their classmates and families. Much of what makes a good character is how they interact with other people.
  • Attention Grab – C – I usually pay attention, but never am waiting around for the next episode to come out.
  • Production – B – Looks fine.
  • Overall – C+

Recommendations – Moyashimon, Spice and Wolf

  1. I also felt it was a bit less entertaining b/c I knew the characters’ quirks. Too bad that Ayame, the new ojou-sama character, wasn’t really developed at all. The development re Komaba in ep. 8 was a little shock for me, though, and after that I was really looking forward for the next episodes to see how things would develop. Komaba was this cool winner type who excels at everything and so I had assumed that nothing bad would ever happen to him. The visit to his farm in ep. 9 was really moving.

    1. Yeah, the ojou-sama never really did much. I was surprised by Komaba as well. Definitely did not see that one coming. If it was that bald kid I wouldn’t have been surprised.
