Isekai Shokudou — First Impressions

A chef serves Japanese food to fantasy creatures.

I enjoyed the first episode. The premise of strange creatures eating at a Japanese restaurant was amusing enough.

Not too impressed with the cooking though. At one point, the girl is amazed by the ridiculous food this guy cooks. And then she goes through eating a piece of toast, some shredded lettuce, and a cherry tomato, oohing and aahing at every bite. I mean, I can appreciate that she’s starving, but still… I wouldn’t exactly be too impressed with the chef’s abilities for a raw tomato…

I have no idea where this show is headed from here. But I’ll at least see where it goes.

  1. One reason that Isekai Shokudou is appealing to me is that the reactions of the fantasy world people to even such a thing as a good-tasting cherry tomato is kinda realistic if you take into account the fact that the quality of food a modern restaurant has is leaps and bounds beyond what a medieval society would have. We have refrigeration, rapid transport, power tools, sanitation, advanced farming techniques and even genetic engineering that allow us to get quality food a medieval society could only dream of. What people in the modern world take for granted is a miracle to someone who has never experienced such.

    1. Good point. It is amusing how excited they are by food that, if I’m being honest, doesn’t seem particularly impressive in this time period.

  2. Organic tomatoes

More seriously, though, there are some rare instances I can recall where I ate a tomato that tasted nothing at all like the usual ones I eat almost daily. They almost made me ashamed to call the usual ones tomatoes, since the jump up in quality was so large.
