Kabukibu — First Impressions

Kabuki is fun? If so, I sure ain’t getting that message from this.

It’s a show following the usual pattern of gathering club members and doing club activities, except the twist is that the club is to do kabuki. But I felt no enthusiasm behind it. You don’t show how much fun they’re having by having some guy literally say they’re having fun. Also, for these shows to work, you need really strong characters, since the premise itself doesn’t take you very far. Only stories like Chihayafuru, Kono Oto Tomare, and Shiori Experience with some depth to their characterizations and personal drama can pull it off. This show is clearly not headed anywhere near that direction.

  1. Character designs by CLAMP, creators of Cardcaptor Sakura and Tsubasa Chronicle, to name a few.

The source novel’s author is more famous for her yaoi novels, although Kabukibu’s not one of them.
