Kamisama no Memochou Review — D-

Where do I even begin? This was a complete disaster.

Perhaps the biggest problem is Narumi. He is the most boring character imaginable. He has no memorable traits, he doesn’t have any particular goals: hell, he isn’t even a NEET, which this show is ostensibly about. And yet he’s the most popular guy in the world. He becomes Alice’s most trusted assistant (because he’s the best at passing Dr. Pepper to her?), he quickly becomes trusted by all her underlings, and he becomes one of the most respected men and a sworn brother in the yakuza due to his ability to remove malware. Am I seriously supposed to care about this guy?

Then there’s Alice: she’s a brilliant NEET detective who stays in bed all day with her stuffed animals and lives on a diet of Dr. Pepper. She also happens to look like a ten year old girl. Once again, she is one of the most respected people in the city due to her genius hacking skills. All in all, the premise of a girl who never gets out of bed and a loser with no redeemable qualities being feared by the yakuza just pisses me off. And is she supposed to be cute? What exactly is cute about a grown woman with the body of a ten year old who never leaves her bed, stays in her pajamas all day, and lives on a diet of Dr. Pepper? I do not understand this fetish .

The side characters are even worse. Let’s take a look at the ones whose names I can remember. First, Major. I can only remember him because his name’s easy. All he does is play war. Second, the Fourth. Same reason I remember his name too. He leads a yakuza gang that has Narumi as its sworn brother and whose main activity is advertising for concerts. Leading the yakuza is serious business. Oh, and he can sew. What a twist: his character has such depth! Third is Ayaka, the bright and cheerful girl of tragic destiny. Ok, that’s all I can remember.

We could forgive a bit from our characters if there was an interesting story or mystery, but no. Most of the mysteries are painfully obvious, and the characters only serve to make me angry. I actually dropped this about halfway through, but ended up coming back and marathoning the rest. In retrospect, it wasn’t worth it.

  • Plot / Script – D – Boring.
  • Characters – F – Annoying.
  • Production – B – Decent
  • Overall – D-

  1. DAMN you’re harsh. Ha ha! I agree that this was a disappointing show, though. I did like some of the characters, at least better than you seem to have. In particular I think the Major could have been a better character, but they never seemed to give him the opportunity to make something of himself.

Nevertheless I think Memo-chou could have been cut down to about 3 or 4 episodes, because only two arcs had compelling stories. Since they wasted so much time on poor stories, I would have to say this one can be safely missed.

    1. Haha, I think you might be even harsher than I was. 🙂

If there’s one thing I can’t stand in anime it’s being average. This show was middling in every single way. I’d much rather watch a show like Dog Days, which had an amusing premise but was otherwise complete crap, or Hidan no Aria, which passed the point of terrible to become funny. This show didn’t even try to be unique. They played everything by the book, and it ended up not being anything special. That’s not surprising.

  2. Pretty bad season for 12 episode shows. I didn’t see either Kamisama, but I’d imagine they weren’t great.

Shows like Deadman Wonderland, Denpa Onna, Oretachi, and Hoshizoara last season were better than Blood-C, Dantalian, ItsuTenma, and Mayo Chiki…

    1. I’d agree except for Hoshizora and Dantalian— I couldn’t stand Hoshizora, and didn’t think Dantalian was all that terrible.

And I did enjoy Usagi Drop, Ikoku Meiro no Croisee, and YuruYuri this season as well.

  3. Wow, I did not expect such a low rating and harsh review. Although I haven’t seen this anime myself, I have heard bits and pieces of it from others. While no one has claimed it was a stellar series, I haven’t heard something so negative.

With that said, I think I can kind of imagine how this could be terrible. The characters sounds super boring, especially the male lead. He seems just like any other generic nice guy who just happens to be there because the anime needs a male presence (for whatever odd reason). I hate characters like him.

Well, this is certainly not something I’ll try.

    1. I think there’s always a certain bias in reviews of anime: most people who think a series is complete crap are smart enough not to finish it. 🙂

Also, go check out what E Minor had to say, I think he hated it more than I did.

      Thanks for commenting!
