Kekkai Sensen Blood Blockade Battlefront Review — B-

Pew pew boom boom magic powers in New York!

Well, it finally ended.

Kekkai Sensen was a big disappointment to me. It has this great Baccanoesque vibe going. Tons of crazy people in the city doing crazy stuff. I swear that one girl even looks exactly like Ennis. Theoretically it should be something I love.

But unlike Baccano, it never came together. There were crazy people in the city, all doing their own thing, but I never particularly cared about any of them.

For example, take Mary and her brother. It was supposed to be a tearjerker ending. But I couldn’t bring myself to give a crap. They were just a couple of whiny brats. My main emotion towards them was the desire to punch them both in the face. And that’s how I felt about pretty much everyone in Kekkai Sensen (assuming I felt anything towards them at all).

It’s kind of just a slideshow of awesome people doing awesome stuff. For example, take the final episode (which we waited forever for). The entire thing is just Leo running around. He meets random awesome people. They help him in awesome ways. He goes on and leaves them behind. Stupid tearjerker ensues.

It just feels like, “look at these awesome super powers!”. But the actual story has nowhere near the same amount of thought put into it.

  • Storytelling – C – The show’s biggest weakness.
  • Voice – A – Definitely unique style and setting.
  • Characters – B – Pretty awesome guys with awesome powers.
  • Attention Grab – C – I never had too much excitement for watching the next episode. And I fell asleep during the finale.
  • Production – B – Looks good.
  • Overall – B-

Recommendations – Baccano, Durarara
