Majikoi started out strong with an action packed first episode. Then it abandoned everything that made the first episode interesting in favor of generic harem antics. This time around, we have the tomboy, the oujo-sama, the shy girl, the seductress, and the violent girl.
As far as harems go, it was decent, I suppose. They don’t beat around the bush at all and it’s quite dirty-minded (for example, see the first picture). The main character, Yamato, is likable, for the most part. Miyako’s straightforwardness was refreshing, and Yukie’s ventriloquism was amusing. Yukie’s puppet doesn’t compare to Pucchan, but that is a hard act to follow. Wanko and Christiane were fairly bland.
What I don’t get about harem shows is how they always pick the person I despise most to be the lead female. This show’s lead female is Momoyo, who constantly abuses Yamato, both physically and verbally. Why does he put up with this shit, much less come crawling back for more, especially when he has four easy and attractive alternatives?
The other thing I couldn’t stand was all Yamato’s angst about the future of the country. Yamato, you see, has daddy issues: his father left Japan because he wasn’t pleased with the direction it was heading. This plot line was filled with some of the most pretentious BS I’ve ever heard. I wish some of my countrymen in the American exceptionalist crowd could watch this, so they could see how primitive and tribal their own ideology is.
Overall, Majikoi wasn’t anything special. I will give credit where credit is due, though: this is the only harem I’ve seen that went with the hermit crab ending.
- Plot / Script – D – The first episode was fun; the rest of the show was nothing like it.
- Characters – C – Some good ideas for characters, particularly Yamato, Miyako and Yukie, but Momoyo and the antagonists were lacking.
- Production – B – Looked decent, I guess.

Really, how was the game different?
The game had a fantastic story line, great character development and was hilarious throughout. I’ve pretty much given up watching the anime after about 3 episodes in due to playing the visual novel before hand, the difference in quality is just too big.
