My thought process: Ooh, dead people on the moon! Giant robots! This could be pretty cool!
Ten seconds later, a gusts of wind blows up the skirts of a gaggle of girls: Never mind.
Several minutes later: Ugh. If they’re going to make a ton of fanservice, you’d think they could at least make it attractive.
The sad thing is, I thought the setting had a lot of potential. It reminds me a lot of Gunparade March, in that a group of students fights a losing war against invading monsters.
For some reason I tend to really enjoy stories that focus on the losing side of a war, such as Gunparade March and Simoun, my all-time favorite anime. Indeed, the end of the first episode of Muv-Luv began to improve as it shifted focus from the changing room to the battlefield, where the humans begin to die and to wallow in despair.
Unfortunately, the setting is not enough to make up for the facts that this is largely an excuse for bad fanservice and that none of the characters interest me in the slightest.
Those breasts …. ughh

Funnily enough the actual main plot of the show isn’t about students fighting aliens. For some reason they decided the first two episodes needed to be anime-original filler about one of the heroines’ (not even the main character) days as a cadet so they could do some exposition, and throw in some fanservice. Pretty much none of the characters introduced there besides Yui even get to survive past the second episode, then after that we get a three year timeskip and a brand new cast with the actual lead character and move into the actual main plot of trained adult pilots testing prototype TSFs.
Ooh. This could be interesting. Kind of like Ga-rei Zero, I guess. I’ll withhold judgement until we see the main cast then. Although I was looking forward to seeing them fight a losing war…
And the award for worst flight suits in a mecha series goes to! Muv-Luv! Because I laughed at how shiny it made the main girls boobs look…wow…that was terrible! I did enjoy the cgi mecha scene with the machines flying through the woods, but other than that I was soooooooooo bored T____T
That said episode two and three have to get my attention or it will get DRROOPPEEED FOREVER, but honestly I never had high hopes for it to begin with so I wont miss much if I passed on it.
Yeah, those suits are all terrible. So many shows have something similar that emphasizes the breasts and groin, but I think they all look hideous. I’ll drop this too depending on episodes two and three, although apparently the rest of the show will be completely different. We’ll see.
Oh man, I’ve enjoyed my ass off these past few days reading various reviews on different sites about this episode. You really can tell when someone didn’t bother to do any background check on the Muv-Luv franchise.That’s exactly why Age and Satelight had to make this episode I guess, for people like you guys who like to think the first episode shows everything a show has to offer.
Notice how only one character had a name was introduced properly? Notice how they never showed the BETA and kept them mysterious the whole episode? Everything is leading up to the second episode. I’m not bull shitting either.
Next episode I think you will understand why Muv-Luv is so highly regarded in the VN community.
Yeah, I know absolutely nothing about Muv-Luv. So you’re saying they made the first episode to trick people like me into not liking the show? Somehow I doubt that… I have never claimed that the first episode tells you everything about a show. I’ve often hated the first episode and loved the rest of the show, and vice-versa. But when all I have to judge things based on is the first episode, I’ll do so.
Well, I am looking forward to seeing what’s so great about Muv-Luv in the next episode!
Its hard to get pumped up for a show that’s named muv-luv, so I don’t have any expectations for the second episode either.

I don’t know, it doesn’t seem that unreasonable to me. I was pretty sure Kono Naka ni Hitori Imouto ga Iru was going to suck based on the name alone. Muv-Luv I think sounds less silly in Japanese than in English though.
The female piot suits are nothing but cheap knock offs of the female school uniforms of the female students. But they have one thing in common, they’re sexually provocative.
I’m confused, what students are you talking about? But they do emphasize certain parts.
