Planet With Review — A

A girl, a maid and a giant cat save the world.

It’s shows like this that make me keep watching anime. I had high expectations with Mizukami behind this, and damn he did not disappoint. Planet With stuffed more into one season than most shows could fit into four.

Thematically this show was just spectacular. Most shows are satisfied to regurgitate the same tired tropes and platitudes that anime has been spitting out for decades. Planet With doesn’t. It has some very thoughtful ideas, breaks your expectations, and makes you actually think. I will also confess that I was a puddle of tears by the end. (but not in a sad way, in a beautiful way)

I can’t recommend this enough. Also, read Spirit Circle.

  • Storytelling – A – Fucking amazing.
  • Voice – A – Norio Wakamato as a dog is just the beginning of what I can say about this show’s amazing voice.
  • Characters – A – Wow.
  • Attention Grab – A – I was glued.
  • Production – A – Looks great. Top notch voice acting.
  • Overall – A

Recommendations – I can’t really think of anything.

  1. I couldn’t disagree with you more. I found the show incredibly rushed, the characters completely undeveloped, and the themes utterly predictable. At one and the same time, it seemed to want to have viewers believe it was challenging anime/mecha tropes, even while it was actually indulging and reveling in them. There wasn’t a single moment when I felt emotionally engaged by what was going on. The whole thing just seemed like an overstuffed, awkward attempt to “prove” that Mizukami could create a commercially successful anime.

I should note that my opinion seems to be far in the minority on this, and your review probably expresses what most people who watched “Planet With” feel about the show, but I had to get it off my chest. I’m not lukewarm about this series. I think it’s awful, in part because it was such a huge disappointment against my expectations.
