Re: Hamatora Review — D+

A bunch of friends with superpowers have problems.

See what I said last time, as this season continued along the same lines. Sadly, it opted for less comedy than the first season (the one part of the show I liked) and replaced it with a more serious plot and climax.

It’s a bit hard to follow the plot, although this is probably because I couldn’t be bothered to really pay attention. It’s the kind of thing anime loves to do, with some tragic backstory tossed in at the last minute, the cute girl who seemed completely useless for the majority of the show is key, and everyone will be bestest friends forever even though earlier they tried to kill each other. It was all a silly misunderstanding!

Anyway, I’m exaggerating, it wasn’t that bad. I’m just annoyed it wasn’t gayer, it had the potential to be so much better.

  • Storytelling – D – Should have done more jokes instead of serious feelings.
  • Voice – C – Needs to be gayer.
  • Characters – C – Art was kind of cool until they decided to brainwash him halfway through. I always got Nice’s sidekicks mixed up (also their names are dumb).
  • Attention Grab – D – I didn’t have much interest in the story.
  • Production – B – Looks fine.
  • Overall – D+

Recommendations – Psycho Pass, Darker than Black, Tokyo ESP

  1. The existence of this anime has further strengthened the sad fact that any average guy can become an acknowledged writer in Japan these days.
The story is flawed on so many level and I have zero respect for it.

Since when the guy has a little brother?
He was introduced on several last episodes out of 24 episodes!
And he was the main motivation for his big brother’s criminal act.
And he cured everybody in a display of miracle which is greater than Jesus.
Also This big brother lead a huge scale rebellion on national television and they released him?
Nice-kun! He almost stabbed you in the heart, turned all your friends into derps, and you forgive him?
The guy must have dropped something on his head as a kid and suffer permanent brain damage.

    1. The little brother was established during the first season. However no expatiation was done on this detail.

I do agree that it is illogical for Nice (or anyone for that matter) to forgive someone who attempted to murder them on numerous occasions and had a played a major role in causing harm to their friends and just about everyone. But given Nice’s persona and relationship with Art, it isn’t (extremely) far from happening (which it did) Nonetheless, seeing that the supporting characters weren’t even bothered regarding this further supports the irrationality of the ending.

  2. C for voice acting? Come on, seiyuu in Hamatora were great for the most part. That is, if you were bothered enough to actually listen.

    1. Oh, no, “voice” isn’t for voice acting, it’s for the distinctive voice or atmosphere or style that the show projects.
