Sakamichi no Apollon 11 — He’s Leaving Home

The last episode was really happy, so this one has to be a downer.

Tons of development this episode. Sentarou’s father comes home, and has a reconciliation of sorts with Sentarou. Well, at least they manage to spend a couple of nights in the same house together. From the little we’ve seen, Sentarou’s dad does seem to be trying, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. I don’t think Sentarou entirely trusts him yet, which I can understand.

Ritsuko practices singing My Favorite Things for the culture festival so that they can have an eye catch with some visual appeal. For what it’s worth, I think that Sentarou, Kaoru, and Ritsuko’s father do look much better than the three guys prancing around half naked in togas. Ritsuko’s singing is fine as far as these things go, but she does have a heavy accent.

Then an accident occurs out of nowhere and it looks like Sentarou is going to die. It turns out his sister was actually hurt, but she’s ok. This part was kind of odd though. Kaoru goes to the hospital room thinking Sentarou was hurt. When he gets there, he finds out it was the sister who was hurt. It almost seems like he has a moment where he goes “oh, phew” and then runs off to find Sentarou where he encloses Sentarou in a loving embrace. This is arguably not the most socially appropriate method for dealing with this situation.

Next week will wrap things up, and with the pacing they’ve been setting so far, I don’t think they’ll have any trouble wrapping things up nicely. I assume that either Sentarou will come back or they’ll go to find him, and life will continue. It was a fun ride.
