Spring 2012 — First Imprsesion

As usual, here’s my rankings of the season’s new shows based on the first couple episodes. You can click the links for details, so I’ll keep the discussion of each short. We’ll see how well this matches my ending thoughts.

So bad I couldn’t finish the first episode: Shibainuko-sanSaint Seiya OmegaPabu and MochizuNaruto SDGakkatsuArashi no Yoru ni: Himitsu no Tomodachi

29. Hiiro no Kakera
The requisite bishoujo show for the season. Not interested.

28. Acchi Kocchi
Knocked me straight out. I can’t put up with this.

27. Medaka Box
Poorly produced, with awful casting for Medaka.

26. Shining Hearts: The Bread of Happiness
Three identical creepily-smiling girls bake bread. What is the point of this?

25. Folktales from Japan
Not bad, but intended for kids.

24. Kuromajyo-san ga Touru!!
Couldn’t really get into it…

23. Gon
Funny, but I’m not the target audience.

22. Queen’s Blade: Rebellion
Surprisingly amusing when I laugh at it (not with it). But it’s still Queen’s Blade.

21. AKB0048
I hate idols.

20. Kuroko’s Basketball
Not a fan of sports anime. But this seemed to have potential if you are.

19. Zetman
Again, I don’t like superhero shows much. But this could turn out ok.

18. Sengoku Collection
If I stopped at the first episode, this show would have been much higher ranked. But then they ditched the interesting main couple for silly idol stories!

17. Saki Side A
It’s missing the tacos and ridiculous powers of the first season. I feel like I hardly know the characters.

16. Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
I liked it, but somehow I still haven’t gotten around to the second episode…

15. Upotte
A silly premise, but it can be funny at times.

14. Accel World
It’s slowly growing on me. I’m starting to like how the main protagonist is ugly as sin.

13. Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka?!! Of the Dead
Butt-love.

12. Lupin III
Adrenaline pumping action. Oh, and more breasts than Queen’s Blade.

11. Sankarea
Zombies never looked so good.

10. Jormungand
Crazy, violent, and a lot of fun.

9.  Natsuiro Kiseki
That laugh! This show is so peaceful, but not in a boring way.

8.  Hyouka
The mysteries are not that interesting, but they’re doing a great job on the romance.

7.  Polar Bear Cafe
Pandas with part time jobs at the zoo? What’s not to love?!

6.  Space Bros
Took a step back and slowed down after the stellar first episode. But they have time.

5.  Haiyore! Nyaruko-san
This has really grown on me after the first episode. Nyaruko is hilarious.

4.  Eureka Seven Ao
I love these sci-fi adventure stories. And this one’s off to a good start. Ao and Holland v. 2.0 are great characters.

3.  Mysterious Girlfriend X
*drools*

2.  Tsuritama
Alien fishermen? I have no idea what’s going on, but this is great!

1.  Sakamichi no Apollon
Episode three sealed the deal for me in putting this at the top of the pack. They sure know how to tell a story!

  1. I’d rank Zetman higher. I like the art style and Hanaka – I just hope they creators soon cut out the ridiculous superhero stuff and make the main girls become a yuri couple (highly unlikely, though).

Jormungand’s plot and action are a bit silly imo. I doubt RL weapons trade has any kind of resemblance with this. The action is good, however, and I liked the girl with the deerhunter hat. Too bad she died.

Hyouka has not yet grown on me but I’ll watch it as a matter of principle. Being a Kyoani show it can’t be that bad.

My favourites are Kuromajo-san (as I mentioned before), Natsuiro Kiseki (for the yuri and the fluff), Lupin III (for the eye candy), Sankarea (story develops promising so far, could become quite involving) and Accel World (for the girls) in this order. So our rankings are quite different.

From your list I’m currently following ## 1, 3, 5, 7-14, 16, 17, 19, 21 and 24. Way too much, I’ll have to cut this list soon. Best candidate to drop is KoreZombie II. I’m not following Space Bros, Tsuritama and Eureka Seven for lack of cute girls (not convinced by Tsuritama). So unfortunately I don’t follow many shows you blog this season. I hope for good discussions on Fate/ Zero and Sakamichi, though!

    1. Oh wow if Zetman ends up having yuri I’m totally in. Jormungand is completely ridiculous, but it’s fun as you said. The girl who died was my favorite too. 🙁

The mysteries in Hyouka are frankly awful, but I do like how they push the romance. The characters are neither open about it nor completely oblivious.

I’m probably going to end up dropping some too, there’s a ton this season. Glad there’ll at least be some overlap. I’ll hopefully do a few random posts on other shows too. (if my schedule slows down…)

  2. For new shows, I’m really enjoying Tsuritama, Acchi Kocchi, and Kuromajo-san. They’re such fun shows.
And then I have Fate/Zero for my weekly dose of epicness. =D

    1. Maybe I should give Acchi Kocchi and Kuromajo-san another try. Everyone else seems to like them… and I was half unconscious when I watched the first episode of Acchi Kocchi.

  3. Sengoku Collection would be better if Oda Nobunaga had more screentime. I’m hoping that she plays a larger role once they’re done with all of the character introduction episodes.

Sankarea is kinda creepy and cute at the same time. I don’t have an aversion to pale girls, but dead ones are an entirely different matter.

I’m happy to see another blogger give Haiyore Nyaruko-san the thumbs up. It reminds me of Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan, which was pretty crazy and funny too.

    1. Yes, I couldn’t agree more about Oda Nobunaga. All these other characters are crap (although I did like the most recent episode with the loli, surprisingly).

I think everyone in their right mind has an aversion to dead girls.

That’s a good comparison. I like Nyaruko better though, mainly because of Nyaruko’s great personality and the fact that this show doesn’t rely on gratuitous violence.
