Suisei no Gargantia Review — C+

An alien raised as a warrior from childhood crash lands on Earth with his mecha and experiences a carefree life.

Gargantia’s biggest issue is that it meanders all over the place without focusing on where it’s headed. One episode is all about belly dancing. One is about the captain dying, and the new commander. A couple are about Amy’s brother. At one point we murder a bunch of babies. Yet none of this has much of an impact on the overall direction of the story. Even Amy (arguably the lead female character) is essentially useless dead weight for most of the show.

Gargantia does come to an excellent finale, fueled by the relationship between Ledo and Chamber, his robot. But the work as a whole falls flat because everything else is both poorly thought out and fails to contribute to the show’s main thrust.

  • Storytelling – C – Meandering and unfocused.
  • Voice – B – Cool setting. Could have been put to better use.
  • Characters – C – Poorly developed aside from Ledo and Chamber.
  • Attention Grab – B – Kept my interest throughout, although partially through ridiculousness.
  • Production – B – Looks pretty. Some beautiful ships and backgrounds.
  • Overall – C+

Recommendations – Turn A Gundam, Last Exile, Fractale (I don’t actually recommend Fractale, but it felt very similar)

  1. Personally I felt a striking similarity with “Blue Submarine no. 6” – but I think “Suisei no Gargantia” comes off as the better show (both for the visuals and because it makes more friggin’ sense). Also, it’s not anime, but hey: Pixar’s “Wall-E” is basically the same story, gender-swapped and with robots instead of humans. For the rest, there’s everything: from the environmentally devastated Earth, to the human dystopian society in space, to the fish-out-of-the-water situation, to the evil AI who wants to enslave humans for their own good.

    1. I haven’t actually seen Blue Sumbarine No. 6. Added to my to do list.

That’s an interesting point, the story of Wall-E is extremely similar.

  2. The reason for this score is no doubt naivety on both ends. Everyone should remember peace at times of war let alone remember war at times of peace. If those who are comfortable with peace for example, will never understand the meaning of pain or suffering. That is why naivety is now and forever a sin. Whether everyone should accept this fact or not. Just know if those won’t accept naivety as a sin forever, They don’t deserve to live on the same planet under heaven itself.

  3. BTW, Amy is less than a useless deadweight who can only flap her mouth all day. Amy along with any other characters excluding Ledo and Chamber are all, “Worse than useless.”

  4. “Even Amy (arguably the lead female character) is essentially useless dead weight for most of the show.” Re dead weight I’d like to note that the kite flying scenes were the best part of this series imo!
Apart from that I basically agree with your rating. The main weakness imo were the bland and unrealistic characters and the overly simplistic portrayal of the various societies, like: “Here are the tree-huggers and there is the evil doom sect.” I kept watching, though, b/c it looked pretty. The show also had some good atmosphere in the second half, when murder and gore kicked in. I’d have preferred an unhappy ending, though, like Galactic Alliance sinking all the ships on the watery planet!

    1. Yes, the portrayals of the societies was ridiculously simplistic. Not exactly what I would have expected from Urobuchi Gen.

The murder and gore parts were a big improvement. 🙂

    2. I agreed on everything about what you said. Amy is nothing more and nothing less and a worse than useless dead weight. I would also take great pleasure of having the Galactic Alliance sinking all the ships and naive person on them and send them all to their watery graves.

  5. As of this moment after seeing the worse than useless show for the very last time, I hereby state “Gargantia” fleet is not recognize as a country, therefore, must be eliminated from the eternal equation. As in kill all of the inhabitants and sink the remaining pieces of junk to the bottom of the sea by the galactic alliance. Those who don’t accept my ideals and philosophy shall be punished severely. That is how the real world works, and that is how it should stay that way.

P.S. Kingkirin1 and I are one and the same.

  6. i have a brand new anime or manga featuring a eighty year old man named Adam lee he lives in Tokyo Japan he is a mad scientist he enjoys inventing all sorts of tech and sells it around the world he is quite wealthy he lives in a big fancy house he has several wives and children along with grandchildren his mansion also has a very large staff to take care of him he creates a robotic android named Evangelina to be his personal bodyguard maid and his personal assistant.
