Summer 2013 Anime Preview

I’ll be the first to admit that I have no idea how next season’s new shows will turn out. So I don’t do any research whatsoever. I just look at this chart, read the summary, and look at the preview image. Your guess is as good as mine. Enjoy: (click to enlarge edit: now it actually enlarges)

Summer 2013 Anime Chart v2.1

Highlights:

  • Symphogear sequel, gonna shoot for the moon
  • The show where they murder each other sounds cool.
  • Rozen Maiden! Yay~!
  • Genshiken Nidaime! Wish they would animate the end of the original manga instead though so I could ship Ogiue and Sasahara more…
  • Watamote! I read the initial chapters of the manga a while ago and recall enjoying it.
  • Free! should be an instant classic, obviously.
  • Milky Holmes is getting a sequel… to the terrible OVA where they played everything seriously?!!! THIS CANNOT BE HAPPENING. THERE IS NO GOD, OR IF THERE IS HE IS EVIL AND DESPICABLE.
  • Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi has the best sounding premise.

  1. Silver Spoon (Gin no Saji)’s mangaka wrote the Fullmetal Alchemist manga, so I’m pretty excited for that. Also, Danganronpa (the murder thing) is being directed by the wonderful Seiji Kishi, who is currently directing the god-awful Devil Survivor 2 the Animation. But then again, he also directed Persona 4 and Angel Beats, so I guess I’m cautiously optimistic.

    1. Ooh, Silver Spoon sounds promising then.

Not sure what to think with Seiji Kishi, Devil Survivor 2 is unbelievably awful but as you say Persona 4 and Angel Beats were enjoyable, if not the greatest series ever either. We’ll see how it goes…

  2. I’m Actually quite curious why people remake 3D films. I’m Looking at you Kara No Kyoukai.
The Knk Series is perfect, I don’t see a bonus in watching Knife Fighting action in 3D.

  3. Ugh, that serious Milky Holmes OVA was the worst. The girls actually competent? What sorcery is this?! At least I still have season two to watch.

  4. Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA…….
    seriously?

*sigh* I wonder why they chose to make this instead of making Heavens feel anime.

    1. Seriously. I really want a Heavens Feel anime. Preferably one that is not total crap like the original…

  5. Dangan Ronpa sounds like an interesting anime. A lot of people have been praising that the game is good. To be fair, it’s not exactly “scary” since the blood color is generally pink-y. XD

Yeah! I’d…watch Free. Just to remove the pretentious taste of AnH. XD I love the show, but I need a shallow fix as well.

    1. Now that you mention it, this entire season is really dark. The only completely light-hearted shows I’m watching at the moment are Nyaruko and Maou-sama. Even Henneko, Gargantia and Valvrave have been getting serious lately.

  6. The ones i’m most interested about are Blood Lad – i’ve seen the PV and it looks pretty awesome, i just hope it turns out ok-, the murder one – hmm… it’s a game adaptation, and we all know how awesome those turn out (sarcasm) but i can’t see how they can go too bad with this concept -, gatchaman crowds – an original story directed by the same guy who was involved with cowboy bebop, serial experiments lain and mononoke, yes please -. I have a lot i want to watch this season, i just hope they turn out ok, aside from 3 anime the spring season was pretty disappointing, maybe this won’t.

    1. Hm, will keep an eye on Blood Lad then. Hadn’t realized it was a game but that does not sound good. They make the premise in the chart sound not that interesting though.

      1. Blood Lad was a manga actually, Danganronpa was a game. Yes… the premise for bloid lad sounds pretty cliched shounen stuff but it might be good.

  7. Aha, someone else who is avoiding the new Monogatari series. As for the others, I’m going to give quite a few series a chance, and will definitely be watching Symphogear. I will naturally disappointed if the moon isnt blamed once again for strange transgressions in the distant past, or Mars if they like the moon, either will do. Looks like quite the solid season in general though.

    1. I’ll probably watch the new Monogatari series just so I can make fun of people who like it.

      LISTEN TO MY SOOOONNNNNGGGG~~~~

      1. “I’ll probably watch the new Monogatari series just so I can make fun of people who like it.”

Maybe I missed something but what exactly is so bad about the monogatari series? I mean if it were as bad as you are implying.. then no one would watch it right?

Yet the fact is Bakemonogatari is the best selling anime series as of 2012 anyways according to this post http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showthread.php?p=1972211#post1972211

Don’t get me wrong I’m not implying that just because a show doesn’t sell as well as those on that list that they are not as good/popular. Also I don’t mean to imply that popular = good. But I fail to see the logic of making fun people because they like something you don’t.

So perhaps you can enlighten me as to why you feel the show isn’t worthy of its popularity and/or why you think that people that watch it are perhaps wasting their time on the show? Serious question though not trying to troll :(.

PS: Yes I do watch the show and while it has its down sides overall the show is good in my opinion.

  8. TWGOK. Cool manga. Crap anime. Indeed. People wondered why did I put Katsuragi Keima among my favorite character. Little did they how interesting he is in the manga. The anime is crap because it totally failed in characterization. Even Elsie and Haqua turned into some potato girls.

    1. Exactly. I was so psyched when I first heard this manga was getting an anime adaptation. I couldn’t believe how terrible it was, starting at the first episode. Same thing with Medaka Box.

      1. Same thing with Beelzebub.
I was delighted when I saw that my favorite WSJ manga was being animated. But I fell flat on my chair after seeing it. “What is this toddler show!!”

        1. I didn’t finish the first episode with Beelzebub. I’ve never read the manga, but given what I saw of the first episode I find it hard to believe the manga is any good. It was that bad…

  9. After the new season of Sailor Moon was postponed I fell into a minor depression but now the upcoming season looks not too bad (in particular as two of my current favourites – Shingeki no Kyoujin and Railgun – will continue).

Tamayura – More Aggressive certainly has the best title. Apart from that I’m also looking forward to Rozen Maiden and Kin-Iro Mosaic (this one could be cute). I also feel that Uchouten Kazoku could be excellent. I’ll almost certainly watch Monogatari although Shinbo indeed should offer something new for this season. Watamote sound good, as well, I agree with you here. I’m not sure about Free!, though – I’ve been watching everything from KyoAni so far just to enjoy animation quality but the bishies in the trailers are just not my cup of tea. And there is a lot of interesting sounding other series next season, as well.

    1. I’ve actually never seen Sailor Moon. I was under the impression that it was for little girls. Would you recommend it as an adult or do you enjoy it more for nostalgia’s sake?

Bishies aren’t my cup of tea either. I’m not sure what to expect either— is it going to be completely serious, or more a parody of K-On and its ilk? Either way I’m optimistic, given the streak Kyoani has been on lately.

      1. Re Sailor Moon: I only watched like half of the first series a very long time ago on TV in a dubbed and heavily edited version. It was my first anime experience, so there certainly is a nostalgia aspect.

But there were many things interesting in their own right: There is a lot of symbolism, not least of a sexual nature. In this respect it’s kinda like Utena (one Sailor Moon season was directed by Utena’s and Penguindrum’s Kunihiko Ikuhara). And two of the sailor soldiers are a lesbian couple. No wonder it was censored so much in Western countries.

Let’s see how much of the aforementioned is kept in the new series as target audience has changed over the years. But for now I find it quite promising!

        1. Really, it doesn’t sound like something that would ever air as a kid’s show over here. I seem to remember some girls in my elementary school who liked it though. That and hello kitty… I suppose I’ll check out the new series when it comes out.

  10. @draggle i look foward fro the anime where they murder each outher and also this original magical girls with tarots since the animation and artstyle look great.
