Summer 2013 — First Impressions

As usual, here’s my rankings of the season’s new shows based on the first episode or so. You can click the links for details, so I’ll keep the discussion of each short. We’ll see how well this matches my ending thoughts.

Ongoing Series: Chihayafuru, Hunter X Hunter, Majestic Prince, Mushibugyo, Shingeki no Kyojin, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S

Space Bros also exists if anyone is still watching it.

Shorts: Don’t know, don’t care.
Unwatched Sequels: Kingdom 2, Ro Kyuu Bu SS, Tamayura ~More Aggressive~

Tamayura is terrible, didn’t see Kingdom 1. The first season of Ro Kyuu Bu actually wasn’t bad. Sadly I’m not a lolicon.

29. Futari wa Milky Holmes
A crime against humanity.

28. Brothers Conflict
I expect lots of things from an incest show, but boredom is generally not one of them.

27. KKK
As bad as it sounds.

26. The World God Only Knows: Goddess Arc
Ruined a great manga with terrible pacing, style and voice acting.

25. Fantasista Doll
Totally generic with an awful script.

24. Kimi no Iru Machi
The production quality is nearly on par with Medaka Box. And it’s an adaptation of a manga that’s universally reviled.

23. Gifuu Doudou!
Not a bad start, but can’t see any reason to continue.

22. Kiniro Mosaic
Cute little girls from other countries, zzzzzzzz….

21. Monogatari Series: Second Season
I am so sick of this.

20. C3-bu
Cute girls shoot guns. Not a bad premise and a good battle scene, but it’s ugly and I don’t want to sit through another afternoon snack time.

19. Hyperdimension Neptunia The Animation
Some creative fanservice but otherwise boring.

18. Blood Lad
Generic. Can’t find a reason to watch this.

17. Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist
Not bad but I’m not really a fan of BL so I’ll probably skip this one.

16. High School DxD New
Pretty decent as far as fanservicey harems go.

15. Dog and Scissors
Too many breast jokes but otherwise ok.

14. Danganronpa
I like the concept but the implementation leaves much to be desired.

13. Gen’ei wo Kakeru Taiyou, Il Sole Penetra le Illusioni
No clue what’s going on. I like that.

12. Fate Kaleid Liner PRISMA ILYA
Not sure why this exists but whatever.

11. Servant x Service
It’s nice when we get a show where the characters are adults. Pretty funny.

rozen_maiden_2013_2 rozen_maiden_2013_1

10. Rozen Maiden (2013)
I’ve only seen the first episode which is a recap so it’s hard to say.

kamisama_no_inai_nichiyoubi_01_1 kamisama_no_inai_nichiyoubi_01_2

9. Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi
Cool premise, no idea where it’s going.

gin_no_saji_01_2 gin_no_saji_01_1

8. Gin no Saji
Funny first episode.

love_lab_01_1 love_lab_01_2

7. Love Lab
Great chemistry between the characters. Seriously, they’re adorable. Funny to boot.

6. Free!
Best fanservice of the season.

symphogear_s2_1 symphogear_s2_2

LISTEN TO MY SOOOOONNNGGGG!!!!

genshiken_3_01_2 genshiken_3_01_1

4. Genshiken Nidaime
More Genshiken makes me happy, although I want to see the Ogiue and Sasahara arc…

watamote_01_2 watamote_01_1

3. Watamote
The perfect blend of comedic and depressing.

uchouten_kazoku_01_1 uchouten_kazoku_01_2

2. Uchouten Kazoku
Excellent character relationships, even if I’m still not really sure what’s going on.

gatchaman_crowds_01_1 gatchaman_crowds_01_2

1. Gatchaman Crowds
Beautiful and bizarre.

In my opinion this is a really great season. I’m fairly certain the top seven series are going to be great, and am optimistic to some degree about eight to fifteen as well.

What are your thoughts on the new season? Let us know in the comments!

  1. Gatchman ep 1 was great, ep2 totally made me hate the MC and question whether I can stomach watching her anymore. Dog and Scissors ep2 was so embarrassingly bad I dropped it without even finishing it. Rozen’s interesting enough, but feels surprisingly formulaic for the premise so far (ep4 will hopefully step things up). WataMote’s steadily getting more and more fun, while Free’s steadily getting less and less fun (I’m not watching it for the fanservice (I’d rank it with Monogatari right now, which I’m no fan of). I’ve still got to try Love Lab and C3, not to mention Genshiken.. I don’t think I can finish Sympogear season 1, though. I’d rank Kamisama and Gin no Saji higher, but only because the former is getting more and more interesting and the latter reminds me of Moyashimon without making me want to just watch Moyashimon again.

    1. I’ve heard lots of people saying they hated the main character after the second episode. Will have to wait and see.

Just saw episode two and three of Free, and yeah, it isn’t quite as fun anymore. Still lots of entertaining innuendo, but otherwise…

  2. You’re list is looking pretty damn good (your cynicism is hilarious by the way); I agree with Gatchaman crowds being at the top of the summer series

  3. Will take a look at the top 10, THANKS a lot, cause i haven’t found anything for me from this season yet.

    Sry for bad spelling 😛

  4. This time, I am certainly sure that our tastes are radically different.

Fantasista doll is quite bad on storytelling, but the battle choreography is surprisingly well done. The character designs are great too.

Gifuu Doudou is underrated. It does have questionable character designs and weak soundtrack, but it does execute the premise of this show well: Reminiscence, something that lots of anibloggers missed.

I am amused by your remark of Kin-iro Mosaic, but I watched it for healing so I don’t think I can judge it properly.

Hopefully this season would be an enjoyable one for both of us.

    1. Yep, definitely tastes. But nothing wrong with that. 🙂

I didn’t think that Gifuu Doudou was that bad. I probably put it lower on the list than it deserved. Regardless, there’s so many other shows this season that I like better and so little time…

  5. Oh God, Gatchaman Crowds is your favourite so far? I wasn’t too fond of Hajime, she was so annoying, and none of the characters really have a personality beyond their one defining aspect. I think I’m going to wait until it’s over and then marathon the whole thing in one night. Going through the process of watching it once a week sounds like a chore.

    1. Well, it is only the first episode. I wouldn’t expect all the characters to be fully fleshed out quite yet.

Regardless, marathoning it all at once might be more fun.

  6. Hm, I enjoy Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya. Well, maybe it’s because I just like Type-Moon or because I’ve read the manga. I probably enjoy the Type-Moon jokes hidden here and there and my two favorite Fate characters Rin and Ilya play important roles. And I always wanted to see Ilya having the happy life she deserved, but never had in FSN. T_T

About the other series on this list:

Well, I “only” watched the first two or three episodes of maybe 15 animes on this list and currently, there are maybe 3-5 series that piqued my interest (besides Fate). Even though TWGOK is one of my favorite mangas currently, I am extremely pissed that they skipped my favorite capture arc (Yui) and summarized it in 30 secs. Unbelievable!

I didn’t even bother to watch some of the other animes on this list, though. For example, I actually read KimiMachi a year ago or so and I absolutely loathe the protagonist and that stupid story. I think I might throw up if I watched the anime.

    1. I’m watching it for my love of Type Moon as well, but haven’t been all that impressed so far. So many Type Moon animes have been huge disappointments…

TWGOK is one of my favorite mangas as well, but I find the anime unbearable. They somehow missed the fact that it’s supposed to be funny, and have completely ruined Keima’s character.

Yeah, KimiMachi is horrible and I knew it would be in advance, I just watch the first episode of everything for the sake of completeness on the blog. 🙂
