This is part 14 of my SAO fanfiction. You can start with Part 1 here.
As Kirito looked back on the past, he realized the truth. He wasn’t truly a part of his family. Sure, he was related to them by blood. But such ties were weak. Genetic ties were nothing compared to the raging torrent of electrons that connected him to other gamers on the net.
Even when he was ten, he felt a stronger connection to his fellow gamers than to his blood family. It is the ties one chooses for oneself that make the strongest bonds, after all. And Kirito had chosen the world of the MMORPG over his family and the world of “reality.” If that is what he had chosen, who was anyone to deny it? Was the world of games any less real? Kirito didn’t think so. He loved the world of Sword Art Online far more than the world he was born in. The beautiful sunsets, the chirping of the birds, the glint of steel in the morning light— it was more true than any other world he had known.
But now, things were different. Imouto had left the imaginary world behind to join Kirito in the real world. Without knowing it, she had entered his family, along with Asuna and Yui. When he had realized her other identity as Imouto, she had left reality behind in tears. In the imaginary world, there was this strange notion that people related by blood couldn’t do swordplay with each other. Kirito needed to disabuse her of this notion. In the world of SAO, family were the people you trusted to practice swordplay with the most. Kirito would show her how enjoyable it was to do it with your family, and bring Imouto back.
Kirito opened the door to Imouto’s room without knocking. Imouto lay curled up on the bed. She didn’t turn to look at him.
Kirito entered without speaking. Their bond was something that could only be communicated without words.
As Kirito crawled onto the bed behind Imouto, he drew his sword. It was magnificent, standing erect and shining in the evening light streaming through the window.
Kirito kneeled behind Imouto on the bed, grasped her firmly, and sheathed his sword. He wiggled the sword inside its sheath.
Imouto began moan. “You’re really strong, Brother. Your sword is so huge… It feels so good…”
Imouto was crying now. “I’m sorry, Brother. You’re my family. And that means Asuna is my family too. Let’s go save Asuna.”
The two headed back to the real world, the world of ALfheim Online.
While Imouto waited for Kirito on the steps, Recon ran up to her. He confessed his undying love for her.
She kicked him down the stairs. His sword was so tiny it may not have even existed in the first place. He was not worthy. As Recon fell down the stairs, his torso became invisible, hidden behind a piece of cloth. Recon was not even worth animating fully.
When Kirito arrived, Imouto challenged him to a duel. Earlier he had jumped into her bed and caught her unprepared, but this time she was ready. She would parry his blade in a manner fit for family members.
During the duel, Imouto’s wings gave out and Kirito caught her in midair. They embraced one another, spinning as place, as they declared their eternal love. Kirito left the naked steel of his sword exposed to the elements as they embraced.
Kirito and Imouto entered the giant tree to rescue Asuna. This time, they would emerge victorious. They were a family now.
Kirito drew his sword and charged.
His sword was big, but the enemy had too many. Kirito faltered, despite Imouto’s healing.
Kirito’s friends The people Kirito bribed arrived to help. They weren’t much use.
Recon entered the tower. He had recovered from his kick, and took it as an acceptance of his love. He gave his life to give Kirito an opportunity. They were family now, too.
Imouto began to cry. “The death penalty for that is really harsh…”
“You’re such a fool, Recon! But your love for Kirito is true. Once you revive, we will have a three-way duel. Four way, once we rescue Asuna.”
“Five way! Don’t forget about me, Aunt Lyfa!” chipped in Yui from Kirito’s pocket.
“Of course, Yui! We’re all family. This is what family is about! That evil bad guy keeping Mommy prisoner doesn’t have a family like we do. That’s why we’ll defeat him!”
“Plus, my sword is bigger than his,” added Kirito. He pulled back his sword, and charged to the spot where Recon had exploded. There was no sign of any thinning of the enemies numbers. “Recon, your sacrifice will not be in vain. I will pierce your floating spirit, and then pierce the heavens! PHALLIC LIGHTNING!”
Kirito’s entire body turned into a bolt of lighing, spraying upwards to pierce his enemies at the speed of light.
Kirito’s sword entered the cold, hard rocked, but did not penetrate.
“Let me in!” shouted Kirito. “I need to release this… if I don’t, I think I’ll explode!”
“Daddy!” Yui gasped. “Players were never intended to be able to open this door!”
“Swordblockers…” cursed Kirito. “I’ll show them. I’ll force these doors open, even if they aren’t willing!”
“Fortunately I have this key card which fell from the sky and landed on my head.”
Kirito opened the hole, and forced his way inside, leading with the tip of his sword.
