Toaru Majutsu no Index Movie: Endymion no Kiseki Review — C-

Girls punched in the face by Touma: 1.

Disappointing, to say the least. Even though Touma did punch that one girl IN SPACE. Now that I’ve kindly provided a picture, though, there’s no need to watch the rest of the movie.

If you do happen to be curious, it follows Index’s usual formula. Touma falls on top of several girls who immediately fall in love with him. One of them is a cute idol who has people after her. Something about science vs. magic yada yada. Miracles are made by not giving up! Touma punches a girl in the face and saves the northern hemisphere from destruction. In short, what we’ve come to expect from Index. Not great but not bad either. I am still watching it, after all…

  • Storytelling – D – Not a particularly interesting story.
  • Voice – C – This show’s one cool gimmick is having both magic and science / telepathy. It’s still a neat setting after all this time.
  • Characters – B – How does this series have so many characters? I guess that’s one of the series strengths, though. It does have a ton of interesting characters. Most of them seemed to show up in the movie, and it just felt like an excuse to showcase them.
  • Attention Grab – C – Was mostly sitting around waiting for some punching action as tons of characters flashed by.
  • Production – B – Looks fine.
  • Overall – C-

Recommendations – Shakugan no Shana, Zero no Tsukaima

  1. “In short, what we’ve come to expect from Index.”
But this movie was completely unindexy.
“Not great but not bad either.”
And it was terrible. With plot crossing all allowed levels of bullshit, pushing in all possible characters just for the sake of it and other problems.

    1. “With plot crossing all allowed levels of bullshit, pushing in all possible characters just for the sake of it and other problems.”

That sounds pretty much like Index to me…

      1. Sorry about laaaaaateeeee reply. I completely forgot that I commented here.

One of the main elements of Index is detailed setting. But this movie has immortal girl (till now the only immortal character in Raildex was unique and wasn’t even human and here we have some random girl) and we were shown only short scene about her past which tells nothing.
We have power of wishes which could be interesting and fit in but was shown without nearly any explanation. Etc. etc.

Also movie crossed all allowed levels of bullshit. Railgun SS2, holistic psychics, twist of NT3 – it all pales in comparision.

        1. No worries!

Yeah, I do see what you mean now. This power of wishing idea doesn’t fit in at all with the rest of the series’ setting.

  2. I am not a big fan of original series, but, this movie is really awful, when I actually watched it. No wonder anime watchers seemed to have lose faith in JC Staff, because the people in this studio must have eaten bad stuffs and gone crazy. They are trying too hard to appeal to the fans, by needlessly include every characters in this movie which is only 1.5 hours. Also, consistencies seemed to have gone down the drain. Since when Styl is so physically fit? Since when Tsuchimikado has known the Sisters? Since when Kanzaki Kaori can breath in space? LOL.

    1. If I am not mistaken…
She can breath in space cause she is a saint…
She is however can’t really control her movement in space…
Though I don’t see the movie so I don’t know what truly happen…

    2. It’s magic, man. They ain’t gotta explain shit.

That being said, it really was an awful movie. How do these epic battles keep breaking out yet nobody in the city seems to care? I can suspend my disbelief a little bit, but the whole idol space concert is absolutely ridiculous.

Your recommendations just goes to show how far this series has fallen. Or has it always been that way, and I just have higher standards?

      1. I think it’s the latter. I can imagine ten years younger self saying:
        “Cool!”
“She moved around in outer space without a spacesuit!”
“She cleared all anti debris missiles alone!”
“She dropped herself back unto the earth’s atmosphere without protection!”

    3. Yeah I was wondering what happend to Styl too haha.

Kanzaki Kaori is a saint so breathing in space and falling to the Earth from orbit is no problem for her. Everything is possible with God! Or something.
