Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii — First Impressions

Otaku office workers fall in love.

I read the manga for this and it’s great. The first episode did not disappoint either. It started with a fantastic dancing sequence in the OP and just got better and better from there. What I love about this series is how the love is very subdued and somewhat even unexpected to the characters themselves. They’re actually friends before they’re lovers (good friends, too, not the common “will you be my friend” kind of friendship) and the chemistry between them is great. Also I just love their personalities, especially the main girl, who expresses exactly what she thinks when she feels like it but also keeps secrets. I also love the portrayal of the otaku, where they have their own diverging interests and aren’t just some generic otaku into everything as is often the case in anime. The portrayal of otaku reminds me of Genshiken in that regard. (which is, obviously, a good thing)

The yaoi ship is strong too. I’m looking forward to the rest!

  1. I don’t know, I read a bit of the manga and the other couple’s relationship just seemed super unhealthy. Maybe it was supposed to be a sign that they really love each other, but it was super abusive on both sides, goddamn.
