Cute girls go camping.
I admit that I’m quite biased here, because I love camping, and it’s an anime about camping. Even if their style of camping is somewhat lame.
I normally can’t stand these slow, slice of life based shows, but I loved this. Each episode flew by, and I was always surprised when they ended.
I think it’s partly the camping aspect, but one of the things this show does best is the characters. Anime tend to have a standard stable of character types that writers draw from, but Yuru Camp branches out much more and none of the characters felt like I’d seen them before. Rin especially: what a great character! A girl who’s shy and keeps to herself, but has plenty of confidence and something she’s passionate about. It seems so simple when you put it like that, but it’s a rarity in anime. Can’t think of any other character quite like Rin.
I also like how the show never condemned Rin’s loner tendencies with some trite lesson about making friends. She made some new friends, sure, but she still likes going camping by herself and there’s nothing wrong with that. None of this garbage about your life being so much better if you spend every waking moment surrounded by friends.
Also, great yuri shipping.
