Zaregoto: Kubikiri Series Review — C

What nonsense.

This is basically Monogatari Murder Mystery. It has the exact same animation style that SHAFT is well known for. Most of the show consists of people talking with each other as they tilt their head awkwardly.

Essentially, it’s Monogatari but not as good. Well, maybe about as good as the first season. Monogatari definitely got better as it went on, culminating, in my opinion, in the excellent Monogatari Series: Second Season (which was, of course, not the second season). In the novels, I suspect this arc was more of a setup, and things would get more interesting later on.

But with just these 8 episodes to go on, the ending was a total disaster. The second to last episode ended with the murderer being caught, with the flimsiest of reasons. Then they just let the murderer go. And then some random new character shows up and drives the main character around in her convertible and lectures him for an hour. Like, what the fuck? And then that’s it.

The rest wasn’t quite as terrible as the last episode, but it had the usual problems of talking and talking with dialogue which is nowhere near as clever as the writers think.

  • Storytelling – C – Gah what an awful ending.
  • Voice – B – They do have style. I’m sick of it, but they do have style.
  • Characters – B – Have potential (except for the lead female). Barely used it.
  • Attention Grab – C – I finished it.
  • Production – B – Looks fine.
  • Overall – C
