Eureka Seven AO Review — A-

Eureka Seven AO is, loosely speaking, the sequel to the original Eureka Seven. It focuses on Eureka and Renton’s son, Ao, who has travelled to a different universe similar to our own.

If you’re looking for a show exactly like Eureka Seven, this isn’t it. The romance takes a backseat (which for me was the highlight of the original, particularly Anenome and Dominique) in favor of time travel and crazy conspiracies. I love time travel and crazy conspiracies, of course, so this was right up my alley. The show poses a ton of questions that it doesn’t explicitly resolve, and it gives you space to think about them. Which is exactly what a show like this should strive for.

The new characters in Eureka Seven AO are great: I have to say I like them better than the original show’s (with the exception of Anenome and Dominique). So much shipping potential here that unfortunately goes unused… although ultimately Ao belongs to Fleur, of course.

Unfortunately this show likes to build up the excitement for when Eureka and Renton make cameos. I don’t understand why. Who cares about Eureka and Rento? I’m much more interested in Ao and Fleur than in those two. They were never all that interesting as characters, even in the first show. Now they should stay back and let the kids take charge.

Overall though, it was a great show that hooked me from the start. This is the kind of show that’s better to marathon than to watch week to week.

  • Storytelling – A – Excellent story that doesn’t reveal everything, filled with twists.
  • Voice – B – Loved Noah.
  • Characters – A – Superb. Especially the pilots other than Ao… Ao was probably the weakest link here, unfortunately.
  • Attention Grab – A – It did want me to keep watching.
  • Production – B – Looking good!
  • Overall – A-

Recommendations – Noein, Dennou Coil, Stein’s Gate

  1. You almost made me choke. I will have to rewatch the series before giving it my final judgement, but I doubt it will make much of a difference.

  2. You’re one of the few people I know that genuinely enjoyed this show. I’m glad I’m not alone. It’s a surprisingly memorable series, and had a lot of BIG moments balance with the quieter yet tense parts.

    1. Most bloggers actually liked this show, except for the nihon review. I didn’t really like this either, but their review is so biased and unjustified that I find it laughable. That says alot.

      1. Me also doesn’t get why everyone hates it so much. but after watching it, i understand how horrible an evangelion duplicate can be.

Edit by Draggle: I don’t mind if you use different names or whatever, but please don’t pretend to be other commenters.

  3. “I’m much more interested in Ao and Fleur than in those two.” we live in a different planet. I don’t think there can be peace in our time.

  4. Fuck truth, both truth as character that always troll at the audience all the time and…the truth that this show is nothing but another mere copy of evangelion.

  5. Its a good show-with wasted potentials, at least they can make a duplicate of evangelion a little bit more exciting, but they don’t, fuck them.

  6. I love anything that has to do with time travel, so I decided to give this show a go, and I got to say I’m liking it so far. I also liked its predecessor and the fight scenes were wonderful they left me speechless. I can probably understand why so many didn’t like Ao, maybe it has to do with the fact that Dai Sato wasn’t in on it?

    1. Perhaps. The largest complaint seems to be the ending, which admittedly was not that good. Still I enjoyed the rest of the show.

  7. This is one of the few reviews that I read that puts AO into its place. The problem with the other reviews, in my opinion, is the fact that they try to link the whole thing to the original series which will not work especially with the context of the series. Looking at the things put in AO, we can see the overlap between the original series and the movie where the Nirvash might be the same Nirvash from the end of the series or another, from the movie, or both (perhaps it became tired of being the command cluster, lol). The Quartz Gun (spoiler alert) was actually a giveaway when it was introduced and the overlaps, even the existence of the series itself, became clearer up to the end.

The only problem with the series was that it was too short to build a story. It felt so rushed that the quality of the story suffered. I bet most fans and reviewers would have been pleased if they saw a 50 episode anime instead of a 24 episode one which was AO.

    1. Yep. AO is not Eureka Seven, and I’m fine with that. It would have been much better if it had twice as much time to work with. 🙁
