A girl battles aliens in a giant robot together with a samurai from the past.
Everyone seems to be ignoring this, but it was one of my favorite shows of the season. Most of it is the atmosphere that Kuromukuro has managed to cultivate. Here they’re fighting off aliens trying to conquer the world, and have this really serious somewhat dark plot going on, but the characters more or act like the cute girls goofing around from other PA Works shows like Hanasaku Iroha and Tari Tari. Actually I would say that Hansaku Iroha was way more dramatic and brooding than this, which literally involves people dying.
It’s not that it’s jarring or anything— in the context of the show, it makes perfect sense. Yukina, for example, is too dumb to be worried about anything. And Kennosuke has a running gag which is along the same lines as Sagara from Full Metal Panic, where he’s not used to things from the present, which consistently brings a lighter touch to things. How the show manages to pull off this light and goofy atmosphere in conjunction with a story that’s fairly dark is quite impressive.
Additionally, superb characterizations. Nearly as good in this department as Shirobako and that fishy show. Even the main character, who seems really boring at first turns out pretty good. I especially like the guy who cusses all the time and the butler. And in addition to excellent characters, which PA Works shows in general tend to have, this one has giant robots and a pretty good plot to top it off.
It even has some hot selfcest. What’s not to love?

I think it’s quite daring for Kuromukuro to end on a pretty open note like that – you’d almost think the director was purposely leaving the door open for a future sequel.
Most likely as a movie, half-recap and half-sequel.
