M3: Sono Kuroki Hagane — First Impressions

Most disappointing first episode of the season?

Because wow, this was awful. The animation is hideous. The writing doesn’t seem to have any idea where it’s heading. It introduces way too much information too quickly, in the most boring form possible.

And the content is mostly silly anime stuff. Fighting monsters but *gasp* the monsters have feelingsBarf. And I don’t care one bit about any of the characters.

Usually I am all gung ho about mecha and sci-fi stuff, but I can’t come up with a single reason to watch this one.

  1. How could you not mention Boobie-Balls while talking about “silly anime stuff”?

It definitely felt as if they were trying to shove way too much information at us too quickly. Rather than let us get to know the MC, they just explored his whole history and motivations in one fell swoop.

    1. That was my third choice for a screenshot, but I didn’t grab a good frame while watching and would have had to rewind and look at the show again to get a good one. Not worth it. Excellent gif though.

Yeah, telling everything about the character up front is not a good way to introduce him. I know a list of facts about him, but can’t associate these with an actual person.

  2. Yea I don’t know why I disliked the aesthetic so much. I mean yea the CGI monsters were ugly and the mechs were meh but everything looked off to me. I thought the characters design were good enough but the color used were consistently boring and the animations themselves were very stiff.

And yea the exposition didn’t felt exciting. It’s the same writer than Zetsuen no tempest which I also found underwhelming though it had a better start then this.

The Lightless realm could be interesting I guess? I’ll give it another episode.

    1. I actually though the CGI looked better than the animation itself. Mainly because it was so dark you could barely see it, but…

This is written by Mari Okada, who has done a lot of great stuff (AKB0048) but has written a lot of crap as well. The director is the guy who did Princess Tutu. So very good lead staff behind this. But I don’t feel like they are putting much of an effort into it.
