Off to a great start. Gin no Saji knows how to make you laugh.
The closest comparison is Moyashimon, which also took place at an agricultural school. Gin no Saji is more down to eath, without the supernatural elements and completely ridiculous characters. So far I’m enjoying Gin no Saji’s sense of humor more as well. But it’s only the first episode.
Two episodes in and I’ve got to say I’m not really impressed. The bad art direction is causing most of the humor to fall flat for me and the show made the main character too much of an idiot for my taste. Unless the next episode reveals the glorious return of Armstrong’s alchemy or something, I’ll probably stop watching this.
Drat. 🙁 Still have to watch the second episode but this isn’t sounding good.
This anime is tagged as comedy but I honestly have never laughed while watching it. I wonder if it’s A-1 Pictures’ fault or Hiromu Arakawa’s fault.
“Oh, damn, everybody have dreams and career planned already. What should I do? What should I do? Why not try horse riding? Since it looks cool. Oh, it is cool.” And then episode 2 ends.
Oh hello? Where is the supposed comedy? Why didn’t the horse shake him off and make his head planted on the ground. Why didn’t anyone fall into horse shit? This is a totally bland slice of slice.
I’ve only read the chapters the anime has covered so far, but at least I felt the manga worked better with the comedic timing and the overall “feeling” of the series. This might be the problem that comes from the fact Silver Spoon seems to jump around a lot in the beginning. I’m not sure when the more “overarching story” will start, but hopefully it won’t be long. And then it might be the anime’s time to shine.
Then again, considering how it’s Arakawa, one might just as well read the manga.

Really? I thought parts of it were pretty funny. I haven’t seen the second episode though.
Huh, I found the show funny enough, particularly in the second episode*. It’s not crazy constant laugh out loud humor, but it’s also a more mellow show working with some nice themes that I appreciate.

I actually quite like the agricultural school setting. It’s like totally different from my everyday life now but I come from a rural area and feel kind of nostalgic. So I guess I will be watching this even if I’m far from overwhelmed.
I noticed the students were discussing the effects of TPP on the farmers’ business. Would be interesting to learn more. Most Japanese rice farmes would be completely lost w/o subsidies, I guess. Dairy farmers in Hokkaido not necessarily so. I hope they manage to get by!
Btw, I must say that the horses were animated much better in Tari Tari and RDG than here!

Well, you say that, but i remember Moyashimon being about random casual fucking, drug abuse, extreme foods, and skipping class. Cant think of anything further away from the premise of this show : having values, doing hard work, and being in harmony with the rest of the life on this planet.
