Given the first three minutes, I was fully ready to rip on and hate this series. This won the poll so I’ll blog it. Usually I avoid blogging comedies since I don’t have much to say it, but so far, I think Hataraku Maou-Sama has the potential to be different from most comedies. Because despite being a comedy, it’s also a rather poignant commentary on loneliness and alienation.
Emi is a character I can relate to quite well. She has a well-paying job, she’s young, healthy and beautiful, and she has friends (even if she doesn’t seem to realize it and declines all their invitations). By any of society’s metrics, she’s a brilliant success story. Yet she goes home every night, eats dinner alone, and confronts these feelings of insurmountable loneliness. Biri-biri~~~~!
I think this show is brilliant. It takes what was a typical shounen action show and turns it into a typical shounen action show with LESBIANS. Genius.
The first episode contains a bit of everything fans of the series remember. Teleporting, railgunning, evil psychotic lesbians, skirt-flippings, Kuroko, etc. My only minor complaint is that I don’t remember the girl in the hospital and her friend at all.
Gah!! I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish this show. It’s literally painful to watch. I keep purposefully distracting myself— I think this episode took me an hour and a half to finish.
That’s not to say this show isn’t good. In fact, it’s the opposite. It’s wildly successful at making me cringe, which is exactly what it intends. Continue reading Aku no Hana 02 — Sniffing
I’m sure some people will hate this but I thought it was a great start. It kind of reminds me of Code Geass. It has a big cast of characters in school, who spend most of their time goofing off. It’s bright and cheerful and happy and goofy. Then at the same time there’s a war going on with all these ridiculous twists being pulled off one after another.
