Sabagebu! — First Impressions

I was expecting to drop this after the first episode based on that last survival game anime, which was just cute girls doing cute things and insufferably boring. But I was pleasantly surprised by Sabagebu. It’s hilarious. I haven’t laughed this much at an anime in a while.

Like it says, don’t go expecting real survival games. And that’s why it’s actually good.

Instead it’s all humor, based on these girls obsessed with survival games doing ridiculous things. I highly recommend this one.

  1. Finally managed to check out the first episode. Well let’s start with the good:

A female protagonist with a spine was definitely a welcome change of pace
References to many gun related references such as Miou’s equilibrium style reloading, Kayo’s cosplay reference to resident evil 3.
Observation type humor such as the appearance of the ghillie suit character, again a nice change of pace.
Intelligent humor such as the 18 age rating for using firearms, etc.

    The bad:
Protagonist still shouts out the joke punchline or reaction which kind of kills the comedy.
Plot; is it planning to go anywhere with Momoka’s friendless situation plotline, or will it be a rapid-fire joke fest with no plot. Both can work but the latter is definitely more difficult because everything rides on the jokes.

Overall, I would probably give a recommendation to others. I certainly understand the appeal of the show and was quite impressed by it. It didn’t honestly grab me as much as hanayamata, but maybe that show is more to my subjective taste than this one is.

    1. The protagonist just keeps getting better and better. It’s still one of my favorite shows of the season.

  2. Thank you for these first impressions, b/c otherwise I wouldn’t have given this show a chance! At first I thought this would just be a Stella Academy rip-off w/ low budget. Actually I quite liked Stella! But I wasn’t interested in watching a bad copy of it. As you point out, though, it’s very different and indeed hilarious! Most comedy anime I don’t like b/c it’s always the same cheap joked but this has been the best in a long time! My second favourite this season. I particularly like Momoka’s surprising ruthlessness and all that fictionally blood being shed like in Elfen Lied!

    1. I thought this would suck too, but what an unexpected gem! It goes to show you can rarely figure much of anything out from season previews alone.
