I’m a bit late, have been travelling the past month. Luckily doesn’t seem like the strongest season so I can reduce what I’m watching a bit and catch up…
31. Lonely Attack on the Different World
Even I don’t hate myself enough to stick with this one. (I uh may have already read the manga though. It’s nice in the sense there is very little dialogue and each chapter is maybe ten pages.)
30. Trillion Game
Dropped in like ten seconds after I saw how ugly it was. Maybe I’m shallow but pretty sure I didn’t miss anything.
29. Touhai: Ura Rate Mahjong Touhai Roku
Yeah I don’t care…
28. Kinokoinu Mushroom Pup
What the fuck…
27. Haigakura
No.
26. Puniru is a Kawaii Slime
Please just no… I don’t think I giggled once during this “comedy”.
25. I’ll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History
Bored out of my mind.
24. The Healer Who Was Banished From His Party Is, in Fact, the Strongest
Ugh. At least it isn’t as nasty as I expect from these by default now. Was actually pure and innocent with a childhood friend. *Barf*
23. Blue Miburo
Another Shinsengumi show. Not my thing. Seemed fine otherwise.
22. Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc.
Magical girls work at a startup company. Didn’t particularly grip me.
21. Good Bye, Dragon Life
Wasn’t as offensively bad as the previous ones, merely unremarkable.
20. The Most Notorious “Talker” Runs the World’s Greatest Clan
Another betrayal by the party. This asshole deserved it though. Don’t really feel like finding out what happens next. Why do we have so many of these shows?
19. Orb: On the Movements of the Earth
It was a good episode, or would have been if they just went with pure fantasy. But I can’t get over how the central premise of these people being tortured and killed for advocating for heliocentrism is just…. not true…? It is like the evil corrupt church in fantasy anime which doesn’t at all believe what it preaches which is much more annoying when it is purporting to be somewhat historical. Anyway, gonna pass.
18. Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister
I actually like the manga (it’s one of those Love Hina kinds of things which is antiquated in this day and age) but the first episode was disappointing. The manga’s art is great and the animation here was not.
17. Nina the Starry Bride
Wasn’t bad, but also… are we really going to have this girl fall in love with the dude who kidnapped her…? Could we just… not…?
16. How I Attended an All Guys Mixer
It was actually kind of interesting? Not going to have time to finish it though.
15. You are Ms. Servant
Really well made. But I doubt I would be able to finish— don’t do well with these magical girlfriend appearance followed by “domestic bliss” (i.e., the girl being a servant) stories.
14. TsumaSho
His wife reincarnated as a ten year old. The fuck. Actually kind of cute. Still probably not going to watch it, I’d prefer to simply not think about this topic.
13. A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School
Reminds me of Iruma-kun. Funny at times. Probably won’t watch due to how busy I am this season but on the cusp of picking it up. Also the English title is terrible. There are no (as far as I could tell) ghouls at this school.
12. Ranma 1/2 (2024)
Good first episode, but sure has aged. Also I feel like we should get remakes of bad anime rather than good ones. Just what is the point? Which is to say, please, let’s get a Grand Blue remake.
11. Demon Lord 2099
Not sure where they are going with this, but at least interesting enough to make me check out the next episode.
10. 365 Days to the Wedding
I’ve read this manga and it’s cute. Quite an engaging and well-made first episode. It’s interesting how something like Amagami sisters, the manga artwork is fantastic, and with this manga it’s not that great, and how the relative reversal in the anime affects which one I’m down to watch.
9. Let This Grieving Soul Retire
I’m intrigued by this solely from it being the exact opposite premise of getting kicked out of the party and then getting revenge. This one he tries to quit the party but his friends love him so much they won’t let him and make him the leader instead. Seemed like a decent sense of humor from the first episode.
8. Mecha Ude: Mechanical Arms
It sure looks good! Not sure about the actual story yet though.
7. The Do-Over Damsel Conquers the Dragon Emperor
Another betrayal story but instead of plotting revenge this is a cute love story. Quite enjoyed the first episode— well made and good sense of humor.
6. The Stories of Girls Who Couldn’t be Magicians
Gorgeous and unique art style. Off to an interesting start, but also no idea where this is headed.
5. Yakuza Fiance: Raise wa Tanin ga Ii
Triggering every red flag in this relationship. I’ve read the manga and it’s good. Anime is very well made too.
4. Acro Trip
First episode did not go the direction I expected, neat art style, quite enjoyed it!
3. Uzumaki
Looks amazing. Shocked how well they translated the art style to anime.
2. Negative Positive Angler
Holy shit this ruled and I even hate sports. Finally a show with a love of a sport I can understand where they don’t care about some lousy competition. I hope this is more about wacky hijinks with these people and less about the fishing though.
1. Dan da Dan
Great art. I love this manga too. It’s weird. Slightly too “shounen battle” in the latter parts but still highly entertaining.
What did you all think? Now that about a third of the season is out, anything I misjudged from only the first episode?
I think you missed Blue Box, but it may just not be advertised as well. Like how people didn’t really know about Undead Unluck supposedly. Advertising and marketing are kind of key these days for visibility in a sea of content.
Heck, I’m thinking of watching Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun because of a short form “spin off” that just concluded a 2nd season. Seems up my alley in the supernatural/occult kind of premise with spirits, etc.
I think it’s available in EN Netflix, was concerned several shows were going to be region locked to JP Netflix, like 4 Knights of the Apocalypse, but Blue Box and Ranma 1/2 remake are both available. Watching less this season, though that gives me a chance to watch something I’ve had backlogged for a while, “Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Aren’t They?” from 2013 (yeah, not the most creative localization)
Oh! I think my eyes just glazed over and I thought it was a sequel to Blue Lock lol (looks like it is also a sports anime so probably not going to bother)
Uzumaki is mercifully short, though it feels like they broke up a 2 1/2 hour movie into 4 increasingly long sections. And while I’ve heard complaints more generally, it was pretty good given it probably got its budget slashed and delayed production for various reasons.
Out of 5, I’d give it a solid 3-4, it has issues in pacing and having to link all the vignettes together even when it doesn’t always make sense, but it makes me hope we might get Gyo, though I think it has an anime movie from 2012. Reviewer I follow did cover it, but I can’t find it because it’s copyright struck by YT
‘
Junji Ito’s getting a lot more stuff adapted nowadays, compared to when all we had was the manga, though apparently there are a lot of live action adaptations too, like for Tomie, Uzumaki, even Gyo had a live action in 2000
well done
