At first I was underwhelmed. Yet another school life show. And Houtarou is lazy just like another version of Kyon.
But then we’re saved by the power of CURIOSITY! Pretty cool scene hair, with Chitanda’s hair growing out to form a spider web and entrap Houtarou. Continue reading Hyouka — First Impression
Much of the reason I enjoy this show so much is not because of any deep or complex reason. It’s not the story, with the friendly rivalry between the brothers, the great characterizations, or the skillful scene composition. It’s how the show manages to make the everyday, simple things Mutta does so interesting. He can even make taking a picture exciting!
Remember from before how Mutta looked in the astronaut’s helmet to envision himself there? Again, it’s such a simple act. But most shows wouldn’t even think of something so simple. They’d have Mutta give a soliloquy about his dreams, or have someone talk to him. But Space Brothers can elicit meaning from the simplest of moments. Wow, this was amazing. Just what I’ve been waiting for. Putting up with Saber and Lancer’s chivalry claptrap was almost (but not quite) worth it.
Archibald starts the episode by generally making an ass of himself. First he murders the priest in cold blood (not that the guy didn’t deserve it, but…) and then he rages against Lancer for Sola-Ui losing her arm and being captured. But I find myself nearly able to sympathize with his actions towards Lancer. He did just have his fiancee captured. I would be mad too. Same drill as usual.
I’ve loosely ranked the season’s shows from worst to best (rough guide: A=awesome, B+=great, B-=good, C=decent, D=bad, F=fail). The numbers in parentheses are how I ranked that series’ first episode at the start of the season. Let’s see how much things have changed.
I’ve tried to keep this post concise. Let’s begin!
Dropped: Recorder to Randsell (18), Kill Me Baby (16), Brave 10 (14), The Knight in the Area (10)
Fallen Behind: Shakugan no Shana III (15 in Fall), Chihayafuru (10 in Fall)
