The Fire Hunter Review — C-

A very ambitious story that completely fell apart.

I have to give this credit for having ambition. It’s probably the most interesting sci-fi premise we’ve seen since Shin Sekai Yori. It feels like it has an interesting story to tell and a well thought out setting. So I tried to give this the benefit of the doubt.

Unfortunately, the anime was a mess from start to finish. The animation style is again ambitious, but they bit off more than they could chew and many parts are barely animated still frames. The story is so rushed that I could barely figure out what was going on half the time. None of the characters are sufficiently developed to make you particularly care what happens to them.

I suspect this probably is based on a pretty good book but the anime adaptation sadly was unable to deliver.

  • Storytelling – F – Probably a decent story, very poorly told.
  • Voice – B – Unique setting and premise.
  • Characters – C – Again, probably decent characters, but the anime did not showcase that.
  • Attention Grab – C – Bit of a struggle to finish.
  • Production – D – Clearly had some artistic inspiration but not enough time / money.
  • Overall – C-
