Kill la Kill 15 + 16 — I for One Welcome our New Alien Overlords

SHIP SHIP SHIP SHIP.

Episode 15 was pure distilled awesomeness. What a great battle. There’s nothing I can say would do it justice.

In episode 16 we learn some of the backstory, that the Life Fibers are actually aliens from outer space that accelerated mankind’s evolution. Clothing doesn’t serve mankind, mankind serves clothing. Satsuki’s mother is their high priest, and she has distributed sleeping life fibers in clothing throughout the world.

Ryuuko and Senketsu’s relationship shows that it doesn’t have to be this way, as we see when Ryuuko recognizes that Senketsu has a will of his own and refuses to go along with Nudist Beach’s plan to kill the other life fibers. A different type of relationship between humans and clothing is possible. I suspect that Satsuki’s mother is wrong anyway. Maybe the life fibers just caused humans to evolve because they were lonely. Poor little aliens.

Further Thoughts

Since the beginning I’ve wanted to think that Satsuki would team up with Ryuuko to fight her mother in the end. And it does like she’s going to fight her mother. But it seems less and less likely to me that Satsuki will team up with Ryuuko, aside from an alliance of convenience. Satsuki appears to be simply replacing her mother’s brand of tyranny with her own. Instead of money she uses fear.

Sounds like a plan!

No wonder Satsuki is so messed up…

  1. I think Satsuki was always autocratic (remember her conversation with Nonon outside the sandbox). Having said that, the episode made me wince hard during the bath scene.

    1. Yeah, she was always autocratic. I was kind of expecting her to have an about face on her autocratic ways once she comes to respect Ryuuko, but that seems less and less likely.

  2. Well, there’s always the possibility of Satsuki having a change of heart. To me, her harshness is the consequence of her lack of empathy – which given her, *ahem*, familiar background is totally understandable. It is possible that breaking the links with her family will trigger a change in her world view as well. Like, how would Satsuki turn out like if she was defeated and wounded and forced to convalesce at the Mankashoku’s house? Now that would be a transformative experience.

    1. Yeah, her autocracy is mostly due to a lack of empathy. She thinks it’s all about the will, and that some people have it, and some people don’t. Of course her family background had nothing to do with giving her such a strong will…

Ooh that is a brilliant idea. An episode devoted to Satsuki staying at Mako’s house. Would definitely watch.

  3. These choices from various factions do remind me of a game which give me three endings: Red, Blue and Green. Let’s hope one of them is the good, correct one.
