This is the second work of Matsumoto Leiji I’ve seen, after Space Battleship Yamato, so indulge me while I compare the two. This show just keeps getting better and better! This episode was all one huge battle as the Federation invades Glacies.
They really know how to keep you on the edge of your seat. There were so many twists and turns in this battle! First the complete annihilation of the provincial fleet (regrettable, of course, hahaha, a nice touch), then the destruction of the sky priestesses, followed by gigantic artillery coming out of the ground. What is it with lemons in anime this week? We have Lemon-senpai in Ano Natsu, Lemon-chan in Zero no Tsukaima, and now “Lemon Scream.”

But I really did like this scene with Kousaka. He comes out filled with excitement and confidence, only to have Yuno not remember him at all. It was a good burst of humor in the midst of all the tension to make the viewer lower their guard. Then Akise and Mao are freed from the gas chamber easily, and it looks like everything will go off without a hitch. That lull is the opportunity for Yuno to pull out a crossbow, shoot Kousaka, and shock the audience once again. The lesson is, to get the biggest shock value, you need to keep luring the viewer back into a false sense of security. Constant surprise after surprise is not nearly as effective.
