Japan sinks under the ocean and things just go downhill from there.
Confession: this is the only Yuasa show I’ve actually enjoyed aside from Tatami Galaxy. (Kaiba was fine I guess.) I’m shocked that I loved it so much.
For most of the show, it was because it was so so unbelievably dumb. Nothing was shocking enough for this show. In the first episode it literally rained body parts. Then multiple characters kept dying in ridiculous ways. Then they joined the cult where they spiked the curry with weed. Then we got the unstoppable archer wheelchair grandpa with his pet robot addicted to morphene. Then we got MORSE CODE RAP and these are only a couple of the highlights I could think of off the top of my head. This show never disappointed.
I just have to especially call out the rap episode which was spectacular.
And then after all of this sheer ridiculousness, they just killed the ending with a beautiful episode that actually brought me to tears. It was beautiful.
I want to especially mention the show’s treatment of foreigners and nationalism— this is the rare anime that’s actually a bit self-reflective on Japan as a country. I thought it was great how they chose to explore these issues from the perspective of a bunch of foreigners.
