Code Breaker — First Impression

Our lead character suddenly meets a sparkling bishounen transfer student. And it looks like more bishounen are on their way!

I’m not too impressed. Our lead characters are the most popular girl and boy in school, everyone is trying to ship them, yada yada yada.

It gets a bit more interesting when a gang of thugs beats our lead character to a pulp, and our lead male snaps a dog’s neck. Um, what? And why are we censoring this?

The show could look at a few interesting ideas if they actually explore the male lead’s philosophy of an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. At the moment it seems that the show’s creators actually think this is a good idea.

  1. As you say judging from the OP it looks like most of this series’ cast will be bishounen. I also read somewhere that the plot will focus on action. Both is not really to my taste but then again I don’t mind the odd bishounen series (I enjoyed Brave 10 for example).

What I like here is that the series feels somewhat darker and more gritty than the average action fare. The male lead so far behaves like an a*** and the girl is constantly threatened and harassed by someone.

Re the dog: I immediately thought of Elfen Lied. I heard somewhere (not sure if it’s true) that this series had been banned in some places for animal cruelty. So I assume the creators want to make sure they can sell this show on a global scale in the unlikely case it turns out to be a smashing success 😉

    1. Not to my taste either, but I’ll give it a chance. It definitely does seem darker than your average bishounen series, at least so far. I don’t think they should have worried so much about it being a smashing success. 🙂

  2. This series is on the edge and hasn’t managed to lean in any direction. The concept is interesting, but the characters are just so generic. If they do decide to focus on action I’m going to drop it, but I’m willing to give it a few more episodes to see if their “evil for evil” philosophy is expounded upon.

I’m predicting that Psycho-Pass will satisfy my need for dark and gritty anime this season.
