Falling Slowly — Eleven Days of Advent and One Day of Christmas #6

It’s tough to pick a single moment of Shin Sekai Yori that stands out. I loved the whole thing. But I’m going to go go with the moment when Saki flies through the air in episode 20.

It’s beautiful. We start out spinning around in Saki’s first person perspective. Then the darkness turns to light and the sun turns to the moon. Everything is still. Peaceful music plays. A masked Shun appears. Saki removes the mask. There is no face.

Saki embraces him as he disappears, still falling slowly through the night sky. She decides she must live.

Color returns to the world, and we’re back in Saki’s perspective, spinning rapidly. Saki crashes into a field of sunflowers.
