What a coincidence!
But this episode was adorable. If there’s one thing Last Exile does well, it’s world building. They aren’t afraid to take the time to have an episode of everyone just hanging out. It pays off, too. Giselle’s relationships with Fam and Millia are much stronger. And we got to see a more human side to the whole crew as they goofed off for a day. Even Tatiana joined in!
Now, excuse me for a minute while I gush a bit about why I’ve become so taken with this show.
- First, it’s adorable. Fam, Giselle and Millia are cute enough. But just look at Teddy. Death by cuteness.
- It has a vast and imaginative setting. It really feels like we’re in a different world. There’s so much detail thrown in: on the ships, on the backgrounds, the various languages, all the different fashions. We even have a unique birthday celebration, a combination of a normal birthday party and Ash Wednesday. And of course Dio has to be the one who leads the singing!Last Exile makes it feel like you’re in a whole new world. The show benefits from being able to expand the already detailed world that was developed in Last Exile.
- It’s fun. From Dio’s acrobatics in the sky to the mechanics’ hockey game, it’s just a joy to watch. It feels like the Silvius would be a fun place to be.
- It’s plot, politics and tactics are surprisingly deep. Much of this proceeds directly from all the effort that is put into building the world. But the political landscape is complex, logical and detailed. The military engagements, like the last two weeks’, manage to be both fun and thoughtful.
I don’t have much else to say this since this episode was so laid back, except that I’m looking forward to next week’s episode. Vincent is one of the last characters I expected to make a return. And I’m looking forward to meeting these Russians!

It took me a couple of tries to read it, but I chuckled at the title to your post! I admit this show is cute, but sometimes it feels like it isn’t much more than that, and that it uses the original as a crutch for all its substance and atmosphere. Also, is it just me, or was that hockey game the worst animation this show has had to date?
The hockey game wasn’t the best animation, but I would prefer they save it for the epic backgrounds and the ship fights where they really need it.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say it uses the original for all its substance and atmosphere; I’d forgotten most of the original when I first started watching and still enjoyed it. I’ve since rewatched the old one, and the atmosphere is actually quite different: Fam is just much less serious in general. Honestly, I think I might ending up liking this latest iteration more, although I could see taking the other side as well…
This was my favourite episode so far! It reminded me of Gosick ep. 12 which which was a smiliar character-centric build-up episode.
Giselle at 9:21 is just too adorable!
What coincidence that Fam gets white lillies for her birthday!
I loved the episode too. Giselle is always adorable. 🙂 She’s my favorite character. The nerds shall inherit the earth.
