Macross Delta Review — C+

Idols and pilots have fun inside of each other.

I don’t know, maybe if this came out five years ago I would have liked it. But after AKB0048 it’s impossible. The whole time I watch this I’m just thinking of how much better AKB0048 was in every respect. When is the third season coming out?!!

Macross Delta tries to do a lot of things, and doesn’t do any of them well (although, to be fair, it doesn’t do them poorly either). The war and dramatic moments don’t have much of an impact due to how generally goofy it is. And it’s goofy but not especially funny. Plus you can see all the “twists” coming from a mile away. Like those two guys who died, you knew it was coming for several episodes. For the love triangle, they barely even tried to make it interesting.

The only other Macross I’ve watched is Frontier (mainly because I wasn’t too impressed with Frontier either) but Frontier was a whole lot better than this. It had actual drama. You were concerned about the characters’ survival. And the love triangle was great (even if that stupid asshole won). You could feel the tension. With Macross Delta? Their idea of tension is making some old guy cry about how his apple trees died. Cry me a fucking river.

  • Storytelling – C – No tension, not funny…
  • Voice – B – It has apples and jellyfish.
  • Characters – C – Not bad. Really could have done a lot more with them though, especially the love triangle.
  • Attention Grab – C – I finished it, but not enthusiastically.
  • Production – B – Looks good.
  • Overall – C+

Recommendations – Here, watch this instead, it captures all the good parts:

PS Green is best girl, Mirage is best love triangle girl
