Shinryaku!? Ika Musume Review — B-

Sequels to two comedies aired this season: Working!! and Ika Musume. While Working’!! quickly became stale and repetitive, Ika Musume managed to stay funny and keep its charm.

Its setup has a lot more space to work with. Pretty much any every day scenario can become funny when you insert squid girl. Have her take a trip to the park with Takeru. Make Sanae her bodyguard. Have her attend elementary school for a day. Or just make Ika Musume small and everything becomes adorable! In Working, on the other hand, the setup for the jokes is more contrived and limited.

If you’ve seen the first season, the second season is much the same. Give it a watch!

  • Plot / Script – B – Consistently funny.
  • Characters – B – Squid girl is adorable. The entire cast is simple but memorable.
  • Production – B – Mini Ika Musume is looking mighty fine!
  • Overall – B-

Recommendations – Working!! (first season), Azumanga Daioh, Minami-ke

  1. Sooooo with you on this! Season two was such a fun ride this time like you said stick Ika in any scene and basically let the comedy flow. Every time I see a episode of Mini Ika I can’t help but screenshot every scene! She is so cute during those…They never require talking and always stand out.

Gotta love those squid puns! De geso! Now I have to wait for Kill me baby, hopefully that can fill my Monday nights for my comedy needs.

    1. I actually can’t stand the squid puns in the subtitles, they tend to be really bad… I’m looking forward to Milky Holmes for next season’s comedy!
