Guilty Crown 22 — When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

It’s finally here. The grand finale of Guilty Crown, that I and all the legions of anime fans have eagerly anticipated for the past six months. And it lived up to all our wildest hopes and dreams.

Our series of Guilty Crown musicians also goes out with a bang (albeit a pleasant one) with our final guest singer, Foxy Lady Ayame of the beautiful world. Please join me in thanking her for sharing her beautiful voice, and enjoy her rendition of “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” We also thank Foshizzel from Metanorn for providing pictures with captions.

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (Click to Download)

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the bride of Ouma died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Shuu, that I should boast
Save in the death of Inori.
All the vain things that charm me most
I sacrifice them as my plea.

See from Her head, Her hands, Her feet,
Crystal and love flow mingled down!
In She and Shuu alone they meet
When Shuu renounced His glorious crown.

Her dying purple, as a flow’r,
Spread o’er His body on the ground
But by Her death She stopped Death’s pow’r,
Shuu’s arm and eyes her vict’ry crowned.

Now by Her death we are absolved.
Our Savior hast answered Her call.
Love so amazing, so evolved,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Commentary

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to end today,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for the end ballet
Is also great
And would suffice. — Robert Frost

This episode was honestly not that bad by Guilty Crown’s (extremely low) standards. It certainly kept me entertained the whole way through, although it was of course ridiculous. Along with the ballet dancing to save the world, we had the world saved by the crystal flower that grew from Inori’s tear and brought her back to life to fight Gai with Shuu.

And of course Gai wasn’t a bad guy (hahaha) after all. He was just doing all this because he had to and because he knew Shuu would stop him. Um, ok. Sure. Whatever you say.

The big “twist” is that Inori uses her magic crystal powers to die in Shuu’s place and become the savior of the world. Jesus should have gotten Mary to help him out like that.

As for the epilogue, I liked how Inori just died but it showed them meeting for Hare’s birthday instead of hers. No one cares about Inori. I also liked how Arisa just randomly got fulled with bullets after everyone else in the world was brought back to life. Boy did she get the shaft. They killed her off almost as an afterthought.

  1. Nice singing Ayame, it’s like being on a cathedral, haha.

So it’s the last one… you did a great job on these song posts, Draggle. I got hooked without watching Guilty Crown.

  2. Like what Snippy-said, it sounded like being in a cathedral :3

I take it from Draggle that Guilty Crown is not a good show at all XD. Nevertheless, I want to ask, are you anticipating the second season? XD

    1. Im not draggle, but… SECOND. SEASON!? …!!?? youre kidding right? they can’t make more of this shit, they just can’t. i must have misread that, its a joke right?

      1. @Takashid- Nawwww I don’t think they will do a season two of Guilty Crown…maybe with a new cast of characters? I know Yuu is still out there somewhere, but I honestly can’t see them pushing another 22 episode series again.

    2. Haha no I don’t think there will be a second season. At least I hope not. Either way I don’t think I would blog it again. 🙂

  3. @ayame – Ooooh, very nice singing. I have no idea if it sounds like being in a cathedral, but I’ll just expect this kind of singing from now on if I go to a cathedral. ^_^

@fosh – Ahaha, nice funny captions!

Haven’t watched Guilty Crown, but still enjoyed the musical posts, draggle. Good job!

  4. Hnnnggg great singing!

At long last Guilty Crown is over and done with, but there are soooooo many unanswered questions like the biggest one of all time what happened to Daryl after the GHQ tower fell?! Damn….

I will miss Tsugumi and Ayase <3

    1. Haha Daryl. Obviously he escaped and became a nice boy. He’s probably best friends with Ouma Shuu now and busy hitting on Ayase. I bet he was just running late to the party at the end.
