Summer 2012 Anime Preview

Click on the chart above to view my summer preview. I shamelessly copied EmperorJ’s professional and detailed preview format. As you may imagine, I poured hours of extensive research into forming scientific conclusions for what anime will be good next season.

No, seriously, I’m just pulling crap out of my ass. I have no idea how anything’s going to turn out. Everything I know about the next season’s shows I gleaned from the preview images and short blurbs on the chart, so feel free to correct me.

Usually the summer and winter are weaker than the spring and fall, but there are a few series that I think have promise this season. In the worst case, there are sequels to YuruYuri, Dog Days and Moyashimon which should be decent at least. Plus there are MILKY HOLMES and Code Geass OVAs which I’m looking forward to.

As for new shows, the premises with the UN arbitrator for fairies and the ten person body swap both sound good. A body swap with one guy and one girl would be awful, but with ten people I think the group dynamics could keep it interesting. The show with the mafia sounds cool too, I’m imagining it as a cross between Jormungand and Umineko but it will probably not be that good. A few of the other shows sound interesting too.

There won’t be as many great shows as this season, that’s for sure, but that might be a good thing. I could have a chance to catch up on this season’s backlog.

  1. Questions:
    1. What about the hellsing OVA?(i dont know when it comes out but I think it supposed to be soon).
    2. How good is Fate/Zero? (Im trying to avoid spoilers so i disnt read your episodic reviews).

    1. 1. I don’t follow these things too closely, but according to wikipedia the release date hasn’t been announced yet.
      2. I like it, although I don’t think it’s the greatest show ever or anything. It always gives you something to think about.

  2. Queen’s Blade is never going to end, Draggle. Not REALLY end, anyways. The fact that we’ve gotten a grand total of some 53 odd episodes over the last three years should be proof enough.

But anyway, there are actually a few shows I’m looking forward to this season too (despite everyone saying how terrible it’s going to be). I think you covered most of them. The two I’m most unsure about are Kokoro Connect and the mafia one. Kokoro seems really like it could go in any direction, in terms of style, quality, or even substance. And the mafia one…it actually seems like it’ll be really bad, but I want it to be good, so I’ll probably give it a try.

    1. Damn it. Queen’s Blade: the gift that keeps on giving.

I pretty much agree on Kokoro Connect and the mafia one. Either could easily turn out terrible. I think the mafia one seems like it should at least be decent if not great, but Kokoro Connect could easily implode into a disaster.

  3. I am looking forward to more hilarious adventures with the amazing cast from Yuru Yuri! Seriously I have missed the hell out of my daily dose of AAAKAARINN!! She was in the last episode of Haiyoure! Nyaruko-san! And I loved it! Well the voice not so much the episode…anyway yes more Yuru Yuri because that series needs more love.

Probably blogging Rinne no Lagrange p2 and maybe some Sword Art Online for a few laughs? Since I heard it is written by the team from Accel world I can bet it will suckkkkkk for a few episodes, but yeah it basically is .hack//sign with moe character designs…but working designs are always great to look at anyway! I hope there is a Yamada-ish character in sword art <3

Horizon epic tag posts are going to be fun! Are we still game for that? Like our Queens Blade tag posts?

    1. I’m psyched for Yuriyuri too. AAAAKAAAARIIIINN!!!!

Have fun with Lagrange and Sword Art Online. I need to prepare and finish the first season of Lagrange.

And lol, I am totally game for Horizon tag posts.

  4. You slightly misunderstood the situation with Kokoro Connect. It’s not 5 girls and 5 guys, but rather 5 total. There’s 2 dudes and 3 girls.

I think it’s pretty silly to dismiss Arve Rezzle as incest-crap. I mean, Kono Naka is fucking *definitely* going for that fetish, but I’m not catching even a whiff of incest vibes from Arve.

Having read the Sword Art Online novels, I can tell you that, aside from being in an MMO, it’s very different from dothack. Much more fast paced and action-focused. And there’s not really any lolis either. Well okay, one or two.

    1. Ah, 5 girls and 5 guys sounds better, but two and three could be cool too.

Hope you’re right about Arve Rezzle. I have become disillusioned and just assume now that every anime that contains a little sister is incest, but this probably isn’t a fair assumption. 🙂

Good to hear Sword Art Online is more fast paced too. I liked .hack/Sign, but it sure took its time.

  5. As for me, I’m not watching much besides Dog Days and Tari Tari in addition to Hyouka… But yeah, I should catch up on my backlog one of these days instead of making it grow further.

    1. Me too. I think I have a terabyte of backlog at the moment. Pretty sure I will never finish all of it.

  6. “The show with the mafia sounds cool too, I’m imagining it as a cross between Jormungand and Umineko but it will probably not be that good.”

It is also based off an otome game–*shivers*

  7. Sorry that I didn’t comment (and did not even follow) your posts for a while. I was (and still am) super busy w/ real life as I am about to change my career as well as move to another town.

There are quite a few shows I’m looking foward to:
    – Kokoro Connect Pre-Air looked good
    – Sword Art Online might be fun (although maybe hyped)
    – Tari Tari is, you highlight it, from P.A. Works
    – I’m quite sure that Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita will be good
    – Maybe Aruvu Rezuru, as I like the promotion art
    – After Chihayafuru I’m enticed to follow Chouyaku Hyakunin Isshu

Looking very much forward to the Dantalian OVA (I’m as surprised as you are!), to Berserk II movie and to the Blood-C movie (this time, I hope, Production I.G. will go all out!).

    1. No problem, I hope your career change and move go well! I moved across the country a few weeks ago myself so I know how that goes.

I haven’t seen the Kokoro Connect pre-air yet, but everyone else seems to think it was horrible. Good to hear a second opinion that not all hope is lost.

I still can’t believe there’s a Dantalian OVA, but it has a lot of potential. Since Dantalian always used short episodic stories, we don’t have to worry about them having nothing to talk about and descending into fanservice as they usually seem to do in these extra episodes. Plus with the extra time they should be able to tell a bit better story, I always thought the episodes were a bit rushed.
