Mardock Scramble: The Second Combustion Review — D+

I liked the first movie, but this was just pointless.

The first half of the movie is spent skinny dipping with talking dolphins in the rainbow cyber ocean. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against talking dolphins. Howard was a pretty cool dolphin. But although this movie tries its best to be trippy, the Illuminatus Trilogy this is not. Japanese people on drugs are about as wild as sober Americans. Sword Art Online 23 — Love, Sacrifice, and Opening Doors (NSFW)

This is part 14 of my SAO fanfiction. You can start with Part 1 here.

As Kirito looked back on the past, he realized the truth. He wasn’t truly a part of his family. Sure, he was related to them by blood. But such ties were weak. Genetic ties were nothing compared to the raging torrent of electrons that connected him to other gamers on the net.

Even when he was ten, he felt a stronger connection to his fellow gamers than to his blood family. It is the ties one chooses for oneself that make the strongest bonds, after all. And Kirito had chosen the world of the MMORPG over his family and the world of “reality.” If that is what he had chosen, who was anyone to deny it? Was the world of games any less real? Kirito didn’t think so. He loved the world of Sword Art Online far more than the world he was born in. The beautiful sunsets, the chirping of the birds, the glint of steel in the morning light— it was more true than any other world he had known. Guilty Crown’s Infectious Stupidity — Eleven Days of Advent and One Day of Christmas #12

Anyone who has been reading this blog for the past year would know that at least one of my entries for the year’s top twelve moments in anime would necessarily involve Guilty Crown. Guilty Crown was one of the most entertaining series of the year, and the one I had the most fun blogging.

It was hard to pick a single moment from this series that stood out, with candidates like:

  • Ouma Shuu becoming Hitler and ruling the school,
  • Ouma Shuu attempting to drown his best friend,
  • “It’s not discrimination, it’s distinction!”
  • Riding into battle on Segways,
  • Iori transforming into Wolverine,
  • Ouma Shuu losing his hand,
  • and many, many, many more.

In the end, I decided to pick Ouma Shuu becoming Jesus and dying to take away the cancer of the world. Check out the summary in musical form, as sung by AJTheFourth of Altair and Vega!

These musical posts were my favorites to make this past year (coming in second would be the SAO fanfictions). Here is a complete list of the musical posts:

Thanks again to everyone who participated and sung! You all sounded wonderful!

Mayaka’s Patient Love — Eleven Days of Advent and One Day of Christmas #11

Hyouka was a great series, one of the best of the year. I loved how the series dealt so lovingly with the mundane mysteries of everyday life; how Oreki gradually emerges from his shell, egged on by Chitanda, and how the club is dragged forward by Chitanda’s infinite capacity for wonder. But my favorite character in Hyouka is Mayaka.

What’s so special about Mayaka? She finds herself in a club of remarkable people: Chitanda, the heir to a wealthy family, beautiful and passionate. Oreki, a genius. Satoshi, with a picture-perfect memory.

Mayaka herself, in comparison, is rather ordinary. She likes reading manga, but is only a middling artist. She’s intelligent, but not a genius like Oreki. She’s cute, but nowhere near as beautiful as Chitanda (in the eyes of her classmates at least, who are, admittedly, idiots). Mayaka’s not even all that dedicated to the literature club, since she splits her time with the manga club. Continue reading Mayaka’s Patient Love — Eleven Days of Advent and One Day of Christmas #11
