As usual, here’s my rankings of the season’s new shows based on the first couple episodes. You can click the links for details, so I’ll keep the discussion of each short. We’ll see how well this matches my ending thoughts.
Ongoing Series: Chihayafuru, Hunter X Hunter, Space Bros
Shorts: Don’t know, don’t care.
25. Photo Kano
Wins the dubious honor of being the only show this season that I couldn’t finish the first episode of.
24. Hayate no Gotoku! Cuties
Manglobe, please just let Hayate rest and peace before you continue to desecrate its corpse further.
23. Yuyushiki
Great if you like Aria and think watching bored people sit around is fun.
22. Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san
Loud and obnoxious does not equal funny.
21. Arata Kangatari
I’m too old for this.
20. Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love 2000%
Too fabulous for me.
19. Zettai Bouei Leviathan
Yawn.
18. Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Bride
The fact that it looks cool is not able to make up for the rest of it.
17. Majestic Prince
So butt-ugly it hurts.
16. Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru.
Somewhat amusing but mostly forgettable.
15. Mushibugyo
This is a fanservicey show but I like it, pretty decent fights.
14. Date A Live
Date! Date! Date! So dumb it’s great.
13. Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai.
I hate this show with a passion. But the second episode with Ayase was hilarious. If they can keep up that level of humor I’m in.
12. Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko
Another perverted show, but it knows how to do humor.
11. Karneval
A cool setting with a lot of intrigue and mystery. Not executed all that well but whatever, we get to see old men making out with their doctors.
10. Red Data Girl
I didn’t like the first episode much, but the second episode was great when they got into all these mysteries and Buddhist stuff.
9. Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge
Still haven’t figured out where this one’s heading. But who would have thought a show about cutting hair could be so good. It reminds me of C^3 though.
8. Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S
Biribiri!
7. Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W
\(・ω・\)SAN値!(/・ω・)/ピンチ!
6. Devil Survivor 2 The Animation
Pretty much makes it here by default since I’m a huge SMT fan.
5. Aku no Hana
So disturbing. Excellent, but not the kind of show you “enjoy.”
4. Valvrave the Liberator
I realize this is somewhat stupid but vampire mecha pilots is my kind of stupid.
3. Suisei no Gargantia
Great setting, still haven’t watched the second episode.
2. Shingeki no Kyojin
Can’t wait until Imouto starts flying around and kicking giant ass with grappling hooks.
1. Hataraku Maou-Sama
Hilarious, with great chemistry between the characters.
It looks like this is set to be a pretty great season. I’ve already started blogging Aku no Hana, Hataraku Maou-sama (which won the poll) and Shingeki no Kyojin. I’m planning to start Gargantia as well. For the fifth show I’m still not sure, but it will probably be either Valvrave or Devil Survivor 2 depending on the second episode.
What do you think of this season’s shows? Let us know in the comments!
This season looks awesome, but then again last season also had Girls und Panzers and Love Live. Both of those were pretty awesome too.
I think you meant to say that last season had AKB0048
I am not a huge fan of video games anime, but Devil Survivor 2 is unexpectedly good. I think it’s because I like apocalypse theme. What? The world is ending in six days? That’s just great…
If you like this kind of apocalypse theme go spend the next year playing every SMT game ever made, thank me later.
Personally I have this weird huge conflict with DeSu 2 to even keep going. I don’t mind if they were keeping the anime in a new different light, but it just feels like they were giving the Protag the “Cool Protag Syndrome” for the sake of it instead of giving light and moments to each and every character that makes them memorable (Daichi’s truck driving scene was meant to give him a chance to shine and make the assault on Dubhe a LOT more impact).
Also, there’s not as much ‘activity” or tension of THE END OF ZE WORLD in the anime as it is in the game. If anything, I was sad that the combat system (with the characters also actively participating and using their phone to summon “Magic” or at least some kinda weapon and the Demons were sort of like something ala Devil Summoner.) was reduced to mere “Byakko, I choose you!”
I just hope the next episodes prove me wrong. I just hope.
Agreed. This is one of the things that annoyed me the most about the game as well. You’ve got all these cool characters and then you, who’s really boring. They do give you the choice to choose some pretty hilarious dialogue choices though, I hope we’ll get some of those in the anime.
Yeah so far the combat is not that exciting, just summoning monsters from no where. Hopefully it will get better.
I don’t really mind the in-game version of the Protag. His role in-game is like the unusually optimistic glue that holds the characters together and makes them interesting in spite of the blank slate choice-dependent personality and the end of the world scenario. It’s better a boring guy who is like every man and gets stronger along with them than a stereotypical cool protag who happens to have a Byakko OP because rule of cool and everyone is kind of dependent on him period.
That’s true, he shouldn’t be overpowered. But what I had more in mind is that he should be interesting. The Persona 4 protagonist in the anime was pretty funny, and also not completely overpowered.
Arata Kangatari is way too low.
Other than that, excelent rank.
Is the second episode better? I dropped it but could be convinced to give it a second chance.
Not really.
It’s about as good as the first one.
And unless something big happens, and i doubt it will, the series will remain as it is.
Ah ok, thanks. I’m probably not going to bother picking it up then. It wasn’t bad, but there’s only so much time in a week…
Aww, no blogging of chihayafuru? 🙁
No, it’s not the kind of show I would have anything to say about except gushing fanboying and shipping week after week.
Most of my favorites this season match yours – though I haven’t seen Hataraku Maou-Sama yet. I’ll check it out.
I think you’ll like it!
No mention of Azazel-san Season 2? The first season was almost as good as Detroit Metal City and Gintama. Definitely worth checking out if you haven’t yet. Only 12 minute episodes.
I watched the first episode and just remember thinking it was sick…
Looks like this season is hills and valleys. I’m not going to watch a series like Aku no Hana if it looks like shit, even if the plot is amazing. I’m not sure how I feel about Yuyushiki though. I like series like Aria, but am not sure if I enjoy watching bored people? O.o
I hated watching Aria, so you can imagine how much I hate watching Aria but with bored people.
After having finally managed to watch most first episodes I agree with you on most ratings and also with this season looking pretty great! From your list I’m currently watching 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 13, 15, 16, 19 and, well, 25 but most likely I’ll drop a few.
I didn’t watch Valrave, though. From what I’ve read at your blog and elsewhere it doesn’t seem to be “my kind of stupid”. That would be Zettai Bouei Leviathan. Valrave (“vampire mecha plot” ?), I guess, is more like Korezombie which really started to bore me in season 2. I prefer to stick to the simpler sort of stupid.
Btw, I quite enjoyed the first ep. of Aiura. It’s a short, so you may not care, but it’s cute and looks nice.
Nice! You’re watching a lot more than you did last season it seems like. I’ve already dropped a good number of shows as well.
Yeah Valvrave is probably not for everyone, sadly. 🙁 I think you’ve really got to be a Code Geass fan to enjoy it the most.
I saw the first episode of Aiura, it wasn’t bad.
I dropped Nyaruko-san; bearing the annoying blonde character is just too high a price for a few shots of Kuu-ko. I also dropped Mushibugyo und I might be dropping OreImo if it doesn’t become funny again. There are still a lot of decent series this season. My fave is Railgun, of course. But Chihayafuru has developed awesome again; I can’t believe that I’m actually enjoying a sports anime so much!
You might want to skip to the latest episode of Nyaruko (5 I think?). Kuuko ends up pretending to be the main guy’s boyfriend, it’s great.
The latest episodes of Oreimo and Mushibugyo have been pretty bland. Especially how they totally ruined Saori as a character. 🙁
I’ve been disappointed with the latest tournament arc… I like the show but these sports series-type tournament arcs tend to bore me.
